I just discovered this thread, way too late for your needs but maybe for future reference? 'Prelude' on 65 Market St near Market Square in Portsmouth. I know it well. http://www.preludeportsmouth.com/ They carry some shaving brushes, some Jagger shaving cream, some C&E shaving supplies. Haven't...

Fozzi, I've enjoyed reading about your progression. It sounds as if you are reading and learning diligently. Certainly, I have no advice to offer in addition to what others have stated, and it is quite obvious that you are teaching yourself better than anyone else could anyway. One thing is certain...

I thought the Super only came in the longer handle but don't really know. I do know the longer handle works best for me. The black handled Super Adjustables (don't know if they made them with any other handle) come in 2 handle lengths. I think the shorter one is around 3.5 inches and the longer one...

Update on the shaving and the skin

Hi all! After a month of trying different combinations of this and that, I'm proud to report a tremendous amount of progress. I am now regularly using Kyle's prep. I have a sweet EJ brush (large, super ... and picked up for $52) awaiting me on my next visit to New Hampshire. I am also the proud owne...

Thanks for the handle insight, Squire. How does the length of handle and weight/balance of razor compare between the Fatboy and the Slim Adjustable? I have largish hands with long, thin fingers. I'd love to hear subjective opinions about control of the razor, how easy (or difficult) it is around cur...

Thanks JL, that helps. I did a little searching online and found lots more info about DIY aspirin pastes. Most of the stuff I read all boiled down to different mixtures work better or worse for different people and issues. Some folks need to keep other medical issues in mind, others don't. YMMV. Tha...

Interesting thoughts on how to handle sensitive skin. This seems to be a sort of YMMV situation. The problem with ingrown hairs is that different people with different skin and beard types get them for different reasons. So what works for one person may not work for another. Some of the ideas you po...

Hi Steve, What was your routine before you switched to traditional shaving? From your posts it sounds as though the whiteheads only started showing up when you made the switch. One way to figure what's causing the breakouts is to figure out EVERYTHING you changed just before the breakouts started. I...

A couple more questions as my quest continues: I found an Edwin Jagger Super Badger Brush (Medium size) for $40. Should I grab it while I can or can I do better? How do Jagger Brushes stack uip against others? Originally, I thought Merkur was pretty much the first and last word in decent DE razors. ...

I'm sure I'm missing stuff, so please take my comments with the cup of salt included. That said, I'm also very new to the traditional shaving routine. In fact, although I've tried some single edge stuff (Wilkinson Bonded) I haven't actually taken the DE plunge yet. When I started moving over to the ...

Aha! I missed the C&E in Kittery, but it was a worthwhile outing, nonetheless. And thanks all for the suggestions. They were very helpful. This will also be useful info. for the next time I'm in the area. If I can remove this topic, I will. Otherwise, I don't need anymore help with this, for now...

Wendell,

Thanks for the idea, but my dad - who is not nearly as zealous in this quest as I - would rather stay closer to the Seascoast. Portland (ME) is also reasonable driving distance (to me).

Thanks for the suggestion, though. I agree that that would be a great plan.

Is the offer still good or did I miss the boat? Does the "GONE" mean you already have a taker? I think I meet your criteria and am in the process of getting dramatically improving my shave. I was thinking of merkur, but I'd love to try the Gillette if you're still offering. You can let me ...

Shopping for Gear in or near Portsmouth, NH?

Hi everyone, I'm wondering if anyone knows of any shops in or near the Portsmouth, NH area that sell traditional shaving gear. Specifically, I'm looking for DE Razors and Brushes. Unfortunately, this is time sensitive. I'll be taking down this post probably tomorrow (3/25/09) afternoon. Thanks much.

Lot's to write, but I'll try (my best) to keep it relatively short: Wendell, a big hurrah for your 50th and thanks for the warm welcome! I find that liberally applying the BP works better (for me, for now) at night. After arriving at my folks in New Hampshire, I was presented with two new tools. One...

Hi Matthew, The term BBS is misleading anyway. You'll never again have the smooth face you had when you were twelve. Trying for too close a shave is counter-productive instead of looking clean and tidy you'll just looked raw / burned. I'd also ditch the Mach 3 - In my unscientific opinion: The firs...

Wow. Thanks for the welcomes and the good ideas. As suggested, I took a few days off from shaving (which is much harder to do when you actually enjoy the ritual), and gave my face some time to heal. It also gave me some time to really examine the various grains I'm dealing with. I finally broke down...

Yet another newbie w/ sensitive skin & lots of questions

Hi everyone! I'm not quite sure how I found mantic's videos or started getting interested in DE shaving, but now I'm excited (and a little apprehensive) to add this to my daily rituals. Of course, the whole idea of traditional shaving is intriguing to me, but I have a few other motivations, too. Aft...

Newbie question about Basic Tweezerman Badger Brush

Hi everyone! First of all, let me start off by saying that I've thoroughly enjoyed reading through many posts. I've only been surfing this board for about a week or so, but I'm very entertained. Thanks. :) Second thing: I'm (slowly) converting from aerosol, multi-blade, cartridge shaving to the more...
