Re: Comparison of Current Popular Shave Cream

Squire - You may be interested to know that Jack Daniel's (not Jack Daniels) has been produced in Lynchburg TN since 1875. As I recall, the bottle says "population 361," contributing to the idea that America's largest selling whiskey is produced in a hamlet in rural Tennessee. 361 may hav...

Re: Vintage Palmolive Brushless

The green Palmolive is what I used when I started shaving in the late 70s. I still have part of a tube that I bought when it was being discontinued; but I have to say that it isn't the very best performer, among brushless creams, in my very humble opinion. (Nor the worst!) Maybe it's a little tough ...

Thanks for the pics, Fitch! I remember Palmolive Rapid-Shave and may even have a can of it stashed in some closet. That Williams ceramic jar lid is gorgeous -- I probably would have bid on it if I'd seen it. They're missing the boat in not doing a limited edition reissue, imho. Somebody had a...

Thanks -- I used that Palmolive brushless for several years in the late Seventies, when I started to shave. The scent is quite evocative. I still have a little of it and the brush version, but the latter has gotten so hard in the tube it may not be usable. I have some vintage US ads for Prep somewhe...

Very much enjoying mine! I haven't quite determined where I'd put it among the Italian soft soaps -- certainly above Cella and P.160, IMveryHO. The Fitness soap, perhaps discontinued, is awfully good, though, as is Figaro.

Thanks again to Gary and all who made it possible.

Palmolive, as part of Colgate-Palmolive, is very much a U.S. company. Here's a historic shave brand tidbit: The "PO" shave soap; formulated in the same Midwest city, that Ingram's shave cream was also first formulated in! Product of Bristol-Myers, wasn't it? Ingram's, I mean. Or did they ...

Well, I don't think you missed out on the golden days of shaving at all. I believe we're in them right now, but we always long for what was because the bad gets filtered out and only the good remains as a memory. I tried to start blade shaving in the late '60s/'70. Now I know that I probably got an...

Me too! And many thanks to Brian and Gary for getting all this sorted, at no profit to themselves! This kind of thing makes "the Gentleman's Parlor" live up to its name.

Anticipation is making this so much more fun! Like an old Heinz ketchup ad, but better. Antica Barbieria Colla seems to be on the fashion industry's radar, judging by this video about Milan Fashion Week. The host drops by the barbershop for a shave. It's just a few seconds, but you can see Sig. Bomp...

The site works for me (you might need to update your flash player). It says they turned to a blend of natural ingredients in their shave cream to deliver the comfort and performance we deserve. Natural ingredients! Gad, the audacity! Why didn't anybody think of that before? "Your skin is...

Here's a blog post about the store. Sounds like a fun place to browse, and very possible they've had these blades buried in a corner since the Nixon Administraton.

Thanks for mentioning it, Russell. I've been shaving with Figaro the last few days because of it! Wonderful stuff. BTW, the Fitness does say it was made by Elberel, but Figaro -- the same hard to open plastic tub but a different color -- says "milmil76" and "Mirato Group." Not su...

I remember Giovanni saying they were the same, but I think there's a slight difference. Figaro has a more pronounced almond scent and a different texture. I like Fitness a little better, but they're both excellent and a great buy. I'd take either one over P160 or Cella. As I recall they are or were ...

I respectfully disagree. It was a big dud to me. It's just another middle of the road cream that will do the job, if you squeeze a LOT of it on the brush, but there's nothing outstanding about it in performance or scent. It does zero moisturizing; it's rather more on the drying end of the scale (but...
