Who's your favorite writer?
Hey all! I've been following the "What are you reading?" thread for quite a while now. Who is your favorite writer (or writers, I guess)? If I had to be stranded on an island with a single writer's library, I think I'd like to be stuck with F. Scott Fitzgerald's works.

I'd want Hardy and Trollope too.

Re: Who's your favorite writer?
Ray Bradbury (what a poet, knows how to set a mood)
John Brunner (vastly under-rated, IMO)
Douglas Coupland
William Gibson
O. Henry (short stories)
Stephen King
Larry Niven (earlier work, for hard SF)
Thomas Pynchon (when I feel like punishing myself)
John Steinbeck
J.R.R. Tolkien
Harry Turtledove
There are a couple of authors who have written series that I had binged through, but I don't continue to look for new or more works by them.
Edgar Rice Burroughs - John Carter/Barsoom series.
Arthur Conan Doyle - the Sherlock Holmes stories
Ian Fleming - I read all of the James Bond canon in 1968. Hey, I was 15 years old.
Robert E. Howard - Conan
Roger Zelazny - 10-part Chronicles of Amber

Re: Who's your favorite writer?
I've a few of John Brunner's books - who couldn't enjoy Stand on Zanzibar? And much as I like some quirky SF writers (Edmund Cooper comes to mind) I don't think they'd be on my desert island list. Maybe some Heinlein from his mature, but not yet overripe, period. Stranger in a Strange Land to Time Enough for Love.

Re: Who's your favorite writer?
It occurred to me that only one author allowed on the island would result in me choosing myself as my favorite. Never have written a book, but with my projected 24/7/365 solitude, I would request about a thousand reams of blank paper and enough writing utensils to cover them all. I could just write down everything going on in reality and in my own imagination. Then when I finally get rescued, I'd sell my books and movie rights.

This. So descriptive you can read a passage and close your eyes and there everything is: sights, sounds, smells, the feel of something. So good.jthomas1264 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 28, 2020 12:39 am Hey all!
