I must admit that I’m enjoying this Gillette safety razor focus here at TSD, and so is my dome! The Gillette selected for today’s shave is my Gillette Big Fellow which dates from the second year of production (1920). The shave on this gassed up Old Type influenced design was, as a British member of the crew is wont to say, “divine”. Particularly when fitted with a Kai blade. Lots of blade feel which I’ve come to enjoy since becoming a regular straight shaver. The combination of size, weight, and heft-in-hand worked perfectly to deliver the kind of two pass velveteen dome smoothness I’ve come to crave in my noggin shaves.
Manhattan Cutlery was a John Newton & Co. brand, circa 1861-1916, manufactured in Sheffield England. This particular straight razor blade was sold in America through the New York cutlery importer H. Boker and fitted with horn scales upon arrival based on a blade matching image." (From the H. Böker & Co. history: "1868) and is easily one of my favorite straight razors. It just feels right in hand, continues to hold a buttery smooth edge. And this morning delivered a luxurious three pass delight. As an older man I’ve really come to look forward to my morning shaves; they truly set the tone for the rest of the day. And today I feel velveteen smooth, clean and refreshed!
RAZOR: Manhattan Cutlery Sheffield 13/16 (Mug), Gillette Big Fellow (Dome)
BLADE: Kai DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: Rooney Ebony Pure Badger
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Aqua Velva (Spanish Version).

Agreed, Gary! But like many of us, I post at a couple of places with friendly folk like SMF, but I do hang my hat at TSD. We’re doing a week long Gillette focus there, thus the reference.

Here we are on Day 4 of the Gillette safety razor focus, and it was time to pull out my favorite shaving Gillette, the New LC. This safety razor is hands down my favorite dome shaving Gillette. It never fails to deliver a very close, smooth noggin shave, and it certainly didn’t disappoint this morning. Equipped with a Kai blade it swept away the dome stubble while providing that blade feel I so enjoy. The mug shave that followed featured my Wade & Butcher 7/8 with its retouched Naniwa 12k/Jasper stone edge. Three delightfully slow buttery smooth passes completed this morning’s shave and put the baby to bed. I feel refreshed, clean and velveteen smooth.
RAZOR: Wade & Butcher 7/8 (Mug), Gillette New LC (Dome)
BLADE: Kai DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: Viking Silvertip Badger
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Pre de Provence Bergamot & Thyme AS Balm.

Woke up this morning to a 32°F bright, sunny morning. We’re currently on day five of the 50 year or older Gillette safety razor focus. Today’s selection is a Gillette New RFB (Raised Flat Bottom) dating from 1930 with a ball end handle. Many of us who own this razor appreciate its efficiency. Of late I’ve been using Kai blades which happen to be a smidge wider than regular DE blades, and must say that I enjoy the increased blade feel, to say nothing about the already great shaving characteristics of this particular design. The dome shave this morning exceeded my expectations. I really like this shaver, whose results left my dome dolphin smooth.
The mug shave featured my NOS DH 1000 Nichiri Tokusen 6/8. There’s definitely something special about Japanese Silver Steel straight razors. This is the one razor whose edge I haven’t retouched. When I received it several months ago, it had a decent bevel. My son Ben had just completed his jnat progression and was looking for a blade to refinish. I happily volunteered this one and ended up with an incredible buttery smooth edge that I know I could never improve on. Today’s mug shave was every bit as good as the prior dome shave, and left your happy narrator in a state of velveteen bliss! I feel clean, smoooth, and refreshed!
RAZOR: DH 1000 Nichiri Tokusen 6/8 (Mug), Gillette New RFB (Dome)
BLADE: Kai DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: MrEE Knurled Aluminum Handle Hybrid Knot #007
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with A&E Post-Shave Serum.

Nothing like a traditional Fat Friday shave to kick off the day! I have never been a fan of TTO Gillette Adjustables, but have found that a Kai blade seems to elevate what was always a ‘meh’ shave to a decent level. Set at 9, the blade feel is decent and the two pass ATG result was a dolphin smooth dome shave. The old French Point Cast Steel Boker straight razor, while it doesn’t hold an edge as well as some of my newer vintage silver or Tamaghane steel Japanese straights always delivers a buttery smooth three pass mug shave, as it did this morning. I feel refreshed, clean and velveteen smooth.
RAZOR: Boker French Point Cast Steel 5/8 (Mug), Gillette Fatboy (Dome)
BLADE: Kai DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: Rearden Razor 316L SS Tuxedo Synth
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with L’Occitane Cade AS Balm.

I decided to finish my week long Gillette safety razor Focus with one of my two 1905 Single Rings. While not my favorite Gillette model, the News hold that honor, I've still managed decent shaves with this early Old Type safety razor, and have to say that the very slightly wider Kai DE blade definitely kicks the shave up a notch to borrow Emeril Lagasse’s expression. There was without doubt more blade feel than usual. The dolphin smooth noggin result reinforced my feelings about these Kai blades. I'm definitely becoming a fanboy! The A. Witte Copperhead’s 6/8 polished 12k Naniwa/Jasper stone edge is clearly seen in the photo, and definitely met the challenge of the prior Single Ring dome shave. Three passes left me with a velveteen smooth, refreshing finish which was topped off with my favorite Royall Lyme AS/Cologne Splash; the only scent my poor fragrance allergic bride can tolerate, if used infrequently.
RAZOR: A. Witte Copperhead 6/8 Solingen (Mug), Gillette Single Ring (Dome)
BLADE: Kai DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: MrEE Aluminum Monster Tuxedo Synth
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Humphreys Lilac. Finished with Royall Lyme AS/Cologne Splash.
