SOTD TUESDAY MORNING, JANUARY 26, 2021

In honour of my friend Jason’s NB21 win yesterday, I decided to break out the Christopher Bradley safety razor from Karve Shaving. This was my first modern artisan safety razor purchase several years ago and one of only four or five of that grouping that remain in my den, I loaded the D_OC plate and prepared for what turned out to be a superb two ATG pass dome shave. Removed the top from a bump on the left side of the dome during the first pass, which surprising disappeared after relathering the noggin with the A&E Shaving Butter. I’m really starting to like this stuff, and decided to use it in the same way I do my trusty MWF.

So after my three pass mug shave with my still favorite straight, the Manhattan Cutlery French Point 13/16’s Sheffield blade, I washed my mug with the Shaving Butter brush squeezings leaving it on both dome and mug while I cleaned up. The finish involved rinsing the lather off with Humphreys Lilac WH which ended my shave. The shave surfaces feel as if a fine balm was applied leaving me feeling velveteen smooth, clean and ready for another day of leisure! Just kidding, today’s the day I spend volunteering at my local dachshund rescue with my own dachshund, Gromit. His specialty is getting the frightened and abused little ones to come out of their shells and play! He’s quite good at it. Enjoy your day, my shave brothers and sisters.

RAZOR: Sheffield Manhattan Cutlery French Point 13/16 (Mug), Christopher Bradley Safety Razor from Karve Shaving with Wide Body Cap (Dome)
BLADE: Sharp Star DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: MrEE Monster Tuxedo Synth
CREAM/CROAP: A&E Shaving Butter
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Humphreys Lilac WH.

SOTD THURSDAY MORNING, JANUARY 28, 2021

Couldn’t have asked for a better shave this morning. A&E Shaving Butter is vegan, and as a devoted lanolin tallow soap fan (MWF), I was initially not positively disposed towards it. After three shaves with it, things changed. It’s marketed as unscented, but does possess a slight, quickly-dissipating, flowery ’frou-frou’ scent which when compared to the strength of scent from their Kaizen-based offerings is unscented. The post shave skin tone of this stuff is awesome. One does not have to use any AS or balm after shaving with this. When coupled with their Post-Shave Serum it is the complete package. The mug shave featured my vintage C-Mon Special 11/16. This extra hollow with its Naniwa/jasper stone edge really belts out the “buttering toast” song as it works. Three slow, pleasant passes rocked the baby, and the following two pass dome shave with the favorite of my three Shake Sharp safety razors, the Model 1.5 with its Bakelite handle and two stacked Feather blades put the baby to bed. I feel clean, velveteen smooth and ready for the day.

RAZOR: C-Mon Special 11/16 (Mug), Shake Sharp Model 1.5 Safety Razor (Dome)
BLADE: 2 Stacked Feather DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: MrEE Aluminum Monster Tuxedo Synth
CREAM/CROAP: A&E Shaving Butter
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with A&E Post-Shave Serum.

SOTD FRIDAY MORNING, JANUARY 29, 2021

This morning’s mug and dome shaves featured the Diamond Hayashi Nichiri Tokusen (DHNT) 6/8 and my long neglected Valet Auto Strop VC4. The VC4 represents the tenth and final Auto Strop model in the line, and to Henry Gaisman, it’s architect, the culmination of 42 years of incremental improvements and the only safety bar design. Although a bit steam punk looking, it is without doubt one of my best dome shavers. When loaded with a freshly stropped Feather FAS-10 carbon steel blade, there is no superior head shaver. In fact I would class this morning’s shave kit as truly “epic” in the pure ‘Keithmaxian’ sense of the term.

For example, I’m developing a real affection for the A&E Shaving Butter/Post-Shave Serum combo in use over the last four shaves. My mug and noggin have never felt better. Although marketed as unscented, there is a slight flowery ‘frou-frou’ scent which rapidly dissipates in use. For you young fellers who enjoy scented soaps, this probably isn’t for you. But for those of us with 65 or more solar rotations under our belts, the skin tone benefits are dramatic and obvious. Complementing the entire kit is my MrEE knurled aluminum handled shave brush. It feels great in hand, and it’s hybrid knot easily handles both bowl and face lathers for dome and mug respectively.

Today’s sunny 22°F morning was the perfect time for a classic ice water shave. After my hot shower, the icy bowl lather felt great as I applied it to the dome. The Valet Auto Strop VC4 is a very well-balanced safety razor, and its freshly stropped carbon steel blade obliterated my dome stubble in two ATG passes with the Traveling Wilburys’ “Handle with Care” playing in the background leaving a delightfully soft, velveteen noggin surface in its wake. The icy lather definitely woke me up, and set the stage for what turned out to be a great three pass Japanese silver steel mug shave with the DHNT 6/8. There really isn’t anything better than a great dolphin smooth shave to set the tone for the rest of the day! Enjoy your morning and/or evening whisker reduction efforts, my shave brothers and sisters.

RAZOR: Diamond Hayashi Nichiri Tokusen 6/8 (Mug), Valet Auto Strop VC4 (Dome)
BLADE: Feather FAS-10
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: MrEE Knurled Aluminum Handle Hybrid Knot #007
CREAM/CROAP: A&E Shaving Butter
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with A&E Post-Shave Serum.

SOTD SATURDAY MORNING, JANUARY 30, 2021

I couldn't help myself this morning! Sorry for the late post. I just want to shave with the new-to-me Sheffield H. Hobson 6/8 full wedge again. I really like the looks of the hand carved scales. I'm also amazed at its efficiency and quiet as this old beauty (1850s) reduced my mug whiskers to the skin line in three enjoyable passes, unlike the songs of the full, half and quarter hollows I own. After yesterday’s fabulous noggin shave with my favorite Valet Auto Strop model, the VC4, I decided to shave the gourd today with my display Queen, the silver plated VB2 Valet Auto Strop again with a freshly stropped Feather FAS-10 carbon steel blade. The two pass ATG dome shave, perhaps because of the OC, didn’t feel quite as efficient as yesterday’s. Nevertheless, the final results checked all the boxes, and left me refreshed and velveteen smooth.

RAZOR: Sheffield H. Hobson 6/8 Wedge (Mug), Valet Auto Strop VB2 (Dome)
BLADE: Feather FAS-10 Carbon Steel
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: JR Custom Rosewood Silvertip Badger #378
CREAM/CROAP: A&E Shaving Butter
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brushsqueezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with A&E Post-Shave Serum.

SOTD SUNDAY MORNING, JANUARY 31, 2021

For January’s last shave I selected the Wade & Butcher 7/8 for my mug and another long neglected safety razor, the Seki Feather AS-D2 fitted with a Feather DE, the blade the razor was designed around. Many have heard that this safety razor is mild, but that is far from the case. It’s a razor designed with a very narrow sweet spot, but once dialed in is capable of obliterating any set of whiskers. Using it with any DE blade other than a Feather, a Bic, a Nacet or a Kai is a mistake. It was optimized for the sharpest blade of the time, the Feather DE. I used this razor following a two week hospital stay over a year ago to effortlessly remove two weeks of growth! The razor is deemed mild by those who have not taken the time to master it. Those of us who have, prize it as a superb shaving tool. I don't have much to say about my W&B; it always delivers the goods! This morning’s shave left me clean, refreshed and velveteen smooth!

RAZOR: Wade & Butcher 7/8 (Mug), Feather AS-D2 Safety Razor (Dome)
BLADE: Feather DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: MrEE Knurled Aluminum Handle Hybrid Knot #007
CREAM/CROAP: A&E Shaving Butter
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with A&E Post-Shave Serum.

JG, regarding the AS-D2, have you had an opportunity to use an original Darwin Deluxe? That seems to have been one of my 2 or 3 best performing DE razors before the SE General came along. I'd be interested in your opinion in a head to head comparison of the Darwin vs AS-D2. I've never used the AS-D2, and probably won't get the chance.
