SOTD THURSDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 30, 2021

I really enjoy shaving with “Bone Mosaic” 7/8, one of the two Victor Creazzi creations I own. The balance in hand and the incredible edge just never let me down. It is one of the straight razor benchmarks I use to evaluate my edges. This morning’s two and a half pass mug shave was excellent as expected, leaving me porcelain smooth.

Fine Accoutrements’s stainless steel “World’s Greatest Safety Razor” was supposedly a homage to the Gillette New LC and a follow on to their successful “Marvel Safety Razor”. The fact that they no longer sell either says it all. I have both. The little pot metal Marvel outshaves its more expensive stainless steel successor, although both deliver a decent shave. Two ATG noggin passes was all I needed to feel smooth clean and velveteen.

RAZOR: Victor Creazzi’s “Bone Mosaic” 7/8 (Mug), Fine Accoutrements’s SS Safety Razor (Dome)
BLADE: Feather DE (Dome)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a heavy scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: JR Boar #374
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Pre de Provence Bergamot & Thyme AS Balm.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL MY SHAVE BROTHERS AND SISTERS - 12/31/21

Today’s shave featured the Rigarazor 7/8. Sergej, a Latvian razorsmith, and proprietor of Rigarazor, builds superb shaving tools. The razor arrived with a beautiful edge about a year ago. After two great shaves, this poor Parkinson’s afflicted boob dropped it and chipped the edge right in the middle of the blade. Thanks to great direction from my son, Ben, and the wonderful steel Sergej built the blade from, I restored the edge. My two and a half pass mug shave this morning was exemplary, leaving yours truly’s face and neck “smooth as a peach” to quote my Swedish shave brother, Hans.

The noggin shave finish closed out this plague-ridden year. I was able to obtain this 1930s vintage NOS Le Coq cagehead safety razor several years ago from a French shave brother, Jean, with a huge Le Coq/L’Essor collection. I traded an immaculate cased 1908 Gillette Single Ring for it. Many friends since have told me that Jean got the better deal. That’s fine with me. Jean has since traded a lovely Famex straight for a Genco 35. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! We’re both happy. The two pass ATG dome shave went swimmingly, leaving your happy narrator velveteen smooth from the shoulders up!

RAZOR: Rigarazor 7/8 (Mug), Le Coq Cagehead (Dome)
BLADE: Feather DE (Dome)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a heavy scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: Alpha Shaving T-400 with 24mm Hybrid Knot Ferrule (Mug) and MrEE Monster Tuxedo Synth (Dome)
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Lilac Vegetal Splash.

A great 'summer' shave on a grey winter day. The cream, although dried, made wonderful lather with a scent that for me is second only to custom Ethos Honeysuckle among the florals. The razor head and handle are my favorite combination, with perfect weight and balance.

SOTD MONDAY MORNING, JANUARY 3, 2022

This morning’s mug shave featured the Bartmann 11/16. The edge on this razor is standout, and although they were only made for 50 years (1948 - 1998) they have achieved almost a cultic following among a select group of wet shavers. I, for the most part, collect one representative razor from each of the brands that interest me. To date, the only exceptions consist of a certain modern artisan’s work and a vintage brand. They are Victor Creazzi’s two razors and my two Thistle Cut razors. I may add Bartmann to that select group.

My mug shave this morning would certainly offer support to the latter feeling. Certain razors just exude quality, and the Bartmann is certainly one of them. If I were ever to get a 7 day set, this is certainly one of the brands I’d consider. The razor is extremely well-balanced, and quite easy to shave with despite a weak Parkinsonian grip. One of the positives of my recent stroke, is that it apparently impacted my upper and lower extremities. I no longer need weights on my arms to straight shave. Whether that’s the result of muscle memory from daily straight shaves over the past few years or not, I welcome it. Two and a half passes and my mug is dolphin smooth.

I’m definitely not a Gillette fanboy, but do prefer the first two generations of their razor designs. The single ring noggin shave yesterday was decent, but today I grabbed my Gillette New Standard, the razor that introduced me to this highly efficient and my favorite Gillette head design. It’s acquisition led to the New LC and New SC blade holders. I really appreciate this safety razor head design. Gillette TTOs just don’t do it for me. My two pass ATG noggin shave with the New Standard left me cool, clean and velveteen from dome to shoulders.

RAZOR: Bartmann 86 11/16 (Mug), Gillette New Standard (Do e)
BLADE: Feather DE (Dome)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a heavy scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: MrEE Aluminum Handled Monster Tuxedo Synth
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys WH. Finished with Williams Aqua Velva AS Splash (Spanish Version)
