SOTD TUESDAY MORNING, JANUARY 4, 2022

This morning’s shave featured the Gipson Katsumi, which at 14/13, just slightly over 8/8, is the widest blade in my collection. The Katsumi was made by Andrey Shpakovskiy, the proprietor and razorsmith behind Gipson Razor of Kiev, Ukraine as an homage to the Saito SK series of smiling blade razors. It’s half hollow grind is a heavier blade than my SK3, but I certainly can’t argue with the quality of shave it delivers. Two and a half passes left my mug velveteen smooth.

The Gem Model 12 is a proven more than a century old design that owes its origins to the Star razor introduced by the Kampfe Bros. of Brooklyn, New York in 1875. It was one of their employees, Jerry Reichard, who worked for them for 23 years, who then opened his own concern, “The Gem Safety Safety Razor Company”. In 1900 due to increased competitive pressure the company changed its name to “The American Safety Razor Company”.

In 1903 Jerry Reichard left to form the “Yankee Company”. And just three years later in 1906, “American Safety Razor”, “The Yankee Company” and “Kampfe Bros.” merged to form “The Personna Safety Razor Company”, which today is known again as “The American Safety Razor Company”. In any case the Gem Model 12 with its lovely Art Deco handle is a wonderfully efficient, well-balanced shaver which left my dome glassine smooth after the usual two ATG passes.

RAZOR: Gipson Katsumi 14/13 (Mug), Gem Model 12 (Dome)
BLADE: Pella PTFE Gem
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a heavy scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: Rearden Razor 316L SS Tuxedo Synth
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys WH. Finished with Williams AQUA Velva AS Splash (Spanish Version)

SOTD WEDNESDAY MORNING, JANUARY 5, 2021

I always have mixed feelings whenever I shave with my Dovo Special. I purchased it 7 years ago for my first few straight shaves. So yes, there’s a certain level of sentimentality in using it. However, it also led to a rather severe injury due to an involuntary, then-unmedicated tremor that turned out to be Parkinson’s. Needless to say it went into a drawer for close to 5 years. Both my neurologist and my bride were firmly opposed to my picking it up again.

But pick it up I did, after strapping my wife’s ankle weights to my forearms. After my stroke this past June, I noticed that my forearm/hand tremors seemed to be minimal to nonexistent. After discharge from the rehab hospital, I was again strongly encouraged by both bride and doc to put away my straights. The term, “stubborn old coot” was used by my oldest grandson when he learned that I had no intention to stop straight shaving.

What I’ve discovered is that I can now shave, post stroke, without the forearm weights. Whether it’s a matter of two years of muscle memory or the fact that I may have stroked out the source of my tremors. In any case, while I still have them; they’re quite minimal, and only seem to make themselves known in the evening when I’m tired. The two and a half pass mug shave this morning was a joy, and left my face porcelain smooth.

My dome shave featured my Ronson safety razor, which was subcontracted by the Ronson Lighter Co. and manufactured by the American Safety Razor Company around 1931. While a bit top heavy, the safety razor can accommodate a modified DE (similar to the Gibbs mod) or an injector blade, which is my preference. This safety razor has pride of Place (pun) for my friend David. It’s a remarkably competent little shaver that delivered its usual superb noggin shave leaving yours truly velveteen smooth from the shoulders up!

RAZOR: Dovo Special (Mug), Ronson Safety Razor
BLADE: Schick Injector II Twinblade (Dome)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a heavy scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: MrEE LE #005 Aluminum Handled SynBad Knot
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Lilac Vegetal AS Splash.

SOTD THURSDAY MORNING, JANUARY 6, 2022

Yurii Kravchenko builds fabulous straight razors, and has sufficient models to offer for even a customer like me. One who doesn’t go for the extra wide blades that seem to be the trend in modern artisan straights these days. Yurii was great to work with. I was looking for a 7/8 extra hollow ground blade with a barber’s notch, pinch grip and blue stabilized maple burl scales. He steered me to his Zodiac model and went on to deliver my custom razor exactly to specifications. It took me one shave to get used to the new razor.

This morning’s mug shave was my third with the razor, and was a delightful experience that checked all the boxes for me. Two and a half passes left me with the kind of glassine result I seek in my mug shaves. I like the heft in hand provided by this superbly crafted shaver. And the edge is sublime! I own two extra hollow bellied grinds, and many regular full hollows, but the extra full, non-bellied grind Yurii provides was new to me. The blade flex initially took me aback, but a slight adjustment in shave angle and all was right in the world!

The French Spadson is a rather rare razor dating to the late 20s to early thirties. The head was crafted to provide a different type of shave - mild or aggressive - depending on which side of the razor head one was using. I used to describe it as “assaultive” before I discovered that the handle was failing to close completely and thus sufficiently clamp the razor properly in the head. After replacing the Spadson handle with a Famex handle, the razor performed well, although to be honest, it’s a highly efficient (ie ‘aggressive) shaver regardless of side used. The key to success with it is ‘lightness of touch’. Two ATG noggin passes without the usual red fluid I’d come to associate with this little Frenchie, and I was porcelain smooth from noggin to shoulders.

RAZOR: Kravchenko Zodiac 7/8 (Mug), French Spadson Safety Razor (Dome)
BLADE: Feather DE (Dome)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a heavy scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: MrEE LE #005 Aluminum Handled SynBad Knot
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys WH. Finished with Canoe Original.

SOTD FRIDAY MORNING, JANUARY 7, 2022

Woke up to our first snowfall of this winter! Only 4 inches which when compared to one of my Idaho friends is laughable, since he is contending with feet instead of inches. Broke out a straight razor I haven’t used in months, the Puma 88 5/8. The edge on this razor was buttery smooth. Two and a half passes gliding on that awesomely slick MWF lather left yours truly’s mug as smooth as my great granddaughter’s behind.

My long time TSD friend and Gillette expert, Gary (@brit), helped me to identify this British Gillette Rocket a few years ago which was misidentified on EBay UK. As many know, I’m not a fan of Gillette TTOs, but I couldn’t say no given the price. As far as Gillette safety razors are concerned, I’m a big fan of their second generation “New” models, but this morning’s shave was nothing to sneeze at! Two ATG noggin passes left me velveteen smooth from noggin to shoulders.

RAZOR: Puma 88 5/8 (Mug), British Gillette Rocket (Dome)
BLADE: Feather DE (Dome)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a heavy scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: JR #378 Rosewood Handled Silvertip Badger
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys WH. Finished with Cremo Cooling Post Shave Balm and Canoe Original Splash.
