Drmoss, I'm using a different stratagem which so far appears to be working. I've placed a small sliver of electrical tape near the spine to produce an adjustment while honing, as opposed to manual adjustment of honing.

The space has reduced quite a bit! Whether this will translate into successful standard honing / shaving I don't know. Once the corrective honing gives me a flat edge I'll go on to standard honing.
