Changing my routine

Post by EL Alamein »

As I age my skin is becoming more sensitive.

In response I've made a few changes to my routine. I went back to shaving before a shower. I build my lather in a bowl and paint my face with it. I wash my face before I shave and the whiskers seem softer because they are still wet from the process when I apply lather. I do a one pass shave with a steep angle, say 30 degrees or more. This is pretty much what I did when I started straight shaving at the age of 12 or 13.

So far my skin seems to like these changes. The shaves are excellent and very smooth for a few hours. It doesn't last as long however and the five o'clock shadow shows up right on time.

It's a trade-off but I'm happy.

Many roads to Rome.

I'd have expected more irritation from an angle of attack >30º, but if it's working for you I'm pleased!

Do you remember how I have posted about not feeling how there is a slight pull with straights? Well, I can feel it when the angle is steep, at least on my cheeks and chin. A lower angle mitigates this and seems to do just as well in those areas.

I use a very light touch also, no pressure, as much as possible. This also seems to help mitigate any irritation issues.

It also crossed my mind that showering after a shave removes more shaving soap residue and that may help as well.

So far, so good.

Indeed, though it used to show up later when I did multiple passes. I'm not bothered by it though as I leave my office a 4 PM. :)

I think we may be at cross purposes. I'm measuring the angle (well, imagining it, really) between skin under the blade and the blade, with the edge as vertex. I've found that such an angle if less than the traditional 30º is more comfortable. When you write "A lower angle mitigates this and seems to do just as well..." it sounds like you mean the same thing.

Dr. Moss, yes, I believe we mean the same thing.

My memory of how to accurately describe angles is fuzzy. I think the proper reference may be "more acute". But, yeah, the angles of 30 degrees or less helps in the more sensitive areas. I know that on my throat I can go more obtuse with no feeling of pull at all. It gets very close and lasts more then the other areas of more acute angles if I am describing it correctly.

I go with the grain in pretty much all areas. So far, so good.

I also have very sensitive skin. Surprisingly, a professional cosmetologist helped me with this problem. But if you do not want to seek help from a specialist, just watch this video, it is very informative (spam link removed)
