Is there any such thing as...

Let's talk about single and double edged razors and the blades that they use.

... a half-way decent quality straight that uses half a DE blade? I just got one of these to 'play' with: http://tinyurl.com/36lluh I've never shaved with a straight and don't want to spend a lot of money, nor does the idea of having to sharpen a straight appeal to me at this point. Figured I could always use a box cutter

Anyway, I put half a good blade in this thing and successfully tested a small patch of facial real estate which got me wondering if this is the best/only solution that uses half of a DE blade. Point me in the right direction if such exists.

They also carry the various blades. Looks like you have a bargain although I can't tell how to load the blade.

And as always...

Enjoy your shave... :)

I suppose it's pretty good for the very low price.

There's a little metal carrier that slides out the end of the 'blade' area. The broken-in-half DE blade just slides right into the carrier which is then reinserted.

That looks nice for the price - a bargain in fact ..., assuming the holder is well designed & made.

Is it well made & designed?...., if it is I may buy a few as gifts.

It seems to me to be ok, but I have no frame of reference to compare it to. I also only have this ONE (didn't order multiples)...so I can't in any way verify that they are all as good (or as bad?) as this one. YMMV.

Will,

Well, the DOVO above is the nicest one I've heard of that uses specifically a half DE blade. If you like shaving with it, though, and want to invest in a really nice tool that does the job, but with it's own proprietary disposable blades, you might look at a Feather Artist Club. Like I said, exactly the same idea, just uses it's own special injector style blades, and is a much nicer instrument.

I have never used these, so can't comment on merits of specific brands, but I do know there is another, made by Filarmonica. I'm pretty sure it uses half of a DE blade.

There's also one call Monsieur Charles or something like that that uses injector blades. I have one that my barber gave me a few months ago.

How is the Monsieur Charles loaded? My barber uses one but I've never seen him load it.

The blade holder slides out, you drop the blade in and slide it back on to secure the blade. It has two pegs that correspond to the holes in the blade. I'll see if I can find it and take a pic.

Never used a shavette but ok. The thing that sucks about Charles is that the handle is attached to the blade (?) with a rivet. After I tried it a few times, it became very loose and wouldn't stay in position. Definitely not like a Feather AC but who saud it was anyway?

That's also how straight razors are attached to their scales. You tighten them with some light taps from a hammer.

The DE blade is supposed to be pretty unforgiving in this kind of razor, since it's so extremely sharp. Not that I've tried it. I think I'm reserving straight shaving for my next life, or maybe the one after that.

i was reading Chris Moss' guide to straight shaving. the one thing that is freaking me is that it says u gotta use both hands, i mean right hand while shving one side and left while shaving the other.

Is it possible to shave both sides just with rt hand ? If so i might get this razor to try shaving witha straight.

TIA,

It's definitely possible. I have real coordination problems with my left hand. I think, though, that while it is harder and scarier at first to use both hands, it ends up being better and easier, once your left gets used to it (it does).
