Should I Shave With My Gold Tech
Should I Shave With My Gold Tech
As some of you may know, I recently aquired an unused gold Gillette Tech. It's in beautiful condition, and has the box and advice card attached to the back of it.
I was fully intending to shave with it, but now that it's arrived and I've thought about it for a bit, part of me thinks it's a shame to make it "used".

Those who design "Fool Proof" systems often underestimate the ability of fools.

This is a hard one, Ian.
If you have an eye toward collecting, you should hold on to it and keep your eyes open for another Tech. They're fairly easy to find, but an unused one is more rare. Especially if you have the box it came in.
If you bought the Tech so you would have one to shave with, go ahead and shave with it.
I have a couple of razors that appear to be unused. Fortunately, they are fairly plentiful so that finding a used one to try should be pretty easy. While I enjoy the history behind a well-used razor and using one, having a couple in the collection that haven't been used is kind of nice, too.

I buy all my razors to use for shaving. That's the great thing about this hobby. You can use a razor in excellent condition so long as you keep it clean and well rinsed. If you want to collect something to look at go and start a stamp collection! Now, if the razor in question was a Toggle that has never seen water, like Tony had, I would think twice about doing that.
Don't deny yourself the pleasure of shaving with a nice razor. You won't do any harm to them. As mentioned, there a plenty of nice Tech's out there so go for it.
Regards,
Bill

I have a handful of select razors that I have in a display case and haven't used. The key point is that I also have a shave worthy version of each which affords me the luxury of keep the others as "look pretties". I would suggest, at least for the short term, to get another gold tech in a slightly less pristine condition to try out and keep the other unused.
Ian,
If you want to collect it, then find a cheaper Tech and use it. Like it has been said, all Techs shave about the same anyway. But I have a gold tech that was fairly nice (not mint) when I got it. I shave with it and am careful not scratch the head. Still looks nice.
My 50 cents worth.

Ian,
I have a gold Tech in the same condition as you. Never been used. Has the advice card still on the razor.
I keep it in my medicine cabinet and get it out once in awhile to show it off.
If I were you I would find a gold one not is such pristine shape and use it as your shaver.
For the most part I will get a razor simply to shave with. But in this case I saw the thing and it was priced right so I bought it.

Unless the razor is in an unopened sealed package of some sort how can you really know a razor is unused? A mint razor could be shaved with a few times and still clean up to an immaculate condition I think. That's why I take ads for NOS with a grain of salt, I just read it as 'excellent condition', but unless I'm breaking a plastic bubble seal or something I'm never convinced that it's truly 'unused' and that doesn't bother me. So not surprisingly, I've shaved with all my razors, including 'NOS' ones I find...
Is there some give-away that a razor has been used?
