Sometimes you just get lucky, when I went to my sources studio looking for a piece of Amboyna Burl I was lucky that he had 1 piece left from his last shipment.
He ran the blank through his planer exposing the grain and we could see that it had solid eyes form end to end.
I decide that to get the best use out of this blank with no waste I'd turn 2 long handles end to end.
Now this can be kinda scary as Burl wood is all twisty grain without the long grain running from end to end that a normal piece of wood has.
This blank was 11 inches long and I was concerned with it snapping in half due to a defect in the grain structure.
It was a bitch to turn, I had to support the backside with my hand as I turned it, but it was without a doubt the nicest piece of Burl I'd ever turned.
I sent the client some pictures giving him the choice of which handle he wanted, he sent a reply that he'd like to buy both handle.
I was going to offer the 2nd handle here but alas they're both sold along with a Burl tipped Bull Mastiff handle.
