Rap

Best comment in this thread!!!

I too loathe rap or hip-hop and the culture associated with it.

I consider myself to have a rather diverse taste in music and can honestly say that my mood dictates what I listen to at any given time.

But two kinds of music I am never in the mood for...hip-hop/rap...and country. Neither has any place in my collection or my life.

Jason

Sammy Davis Jr often said it; Sly and the Family Stone sang it:

“Different strokes for different folks”

While rap is not my cuppa, people like what they like and I respect that.

I'm neither a rural nor urban outlaw. I don't enjoy imagining myself a subculture superman and the musical score for these sketches is seldom compelling (in Country or Hip-Hop). But, as everywhere, Sturgeon's Law applies. The lyrics can be hilariously over the top (and highly NSFW). And the music can be compelling (and the editing hilariously SFW).

To a great extent, I agree. But liking the sort of rap that glorifies the abuse of women, violence, and racism is not something I could possibly respect.

There are two kinds of music - music you like, and music you don't.

For me, as an aging white male (almost exactly the same demographic as the Beastie Boys, coincidentally), rap has some great tracks and some not so great. In that, it's similar to most music genres.

Going back to the original point, though, blasting music at people against their will is obnoxious, no matter the genre.
Give us the luxuries, and we will forgo the necessities.
Give a man a fire, he'll be warm for a day.
Set a man on fire, he'll be toasty for the rest of his life.

Rather than start a new thread for this brief note, I thought it appropriate to add it here.

I rarely have jaw-dropping experiences any more when it comes to music, but the other day I happened to hear a rap song in passing that had a non-rap hook that . . . well, hooked me. I had to find out who this incredible voice belonged to.

Check out the song "Wild Ones" by Flo Rida. Now, ditch his rap crap and listen to Australian lass Sia who steals the song (thankfully), her singing interspersed throughout. Maybe you all have heard her before, so I apologize if I'm late to the game -- but she's dynamite.

Hm. I couldn't decide whether to try to make a case for rap just to play the devil's advocate (although it's a music that I generally don't tend to care for), or to agree, but I can't decide, so I am going to just leave this link here. This is Flight of the Conchords. It is required viewing. The lyrics (slightly NSFW) are in the description.

this is without a shadow of a doubt my favourite rap tune.

it's from a relatively unknown artist, who is also pregnant....scary!

I remember, as a teenager in the '60s, contemplating our rock music and teen culture and wondering what future generations would come up with to top ours! :P

Just terrible noise. I won't go further.

Yes I will. Wonderful values on display. This country is doomed.

Couldn't agree more Brian. A month or two ago I spent an afternoon on Youtube checking out some rarely mentioned performers and songs. Nobody does it any more. One example was Patty Loveless and Vince Gill singing a tribute to George Jones at his funeral service. Another one, the old 40's - 50's German song "Sailor" (Seaman) is so beautiful. Temptations, James Brown, Brooke Benton, Otis Reding, Dean Martin, on and on. I'm just living in the past, I suppose.

Our generation is screwed up because our parents read Dr. Spock. Today's kids are screwed up because they listen to Dr. Dre.
