Tradere open comb, new version.....wow
Tradere open comb, new version.....wow
hi all
Saturday when i got home from work I found a box on the table for me.
Phil at bullgoose reallly ships fast, and in the box was my second tradere razor.
my first one is the first made, they are special for many reasons, quite aggressive yet smoooth to use, the razor is heavy and the handle is long
build quailty is as good as it gets, since i bought this razor i just cant rotate with my otrher razors, i just want to shave with this only and its because it shaves closer and easier than any thing i have ever used,, feels great to hold and i could go on and on
so i thought i would try the new version whichs looks exactally the same as mine but its supposed to be a little more gentle, yet still aggressive
the handle is a tad shorter and a tad thinner too
well it is a touch more gentle yet seems to shave as well as its bigger brother
as for the handle i still like it but personally prefer the bigger longer handle
all in all im really so happpy with both pieces, i doubt ill try the mild version in closed comb but im sure its a winner judging by my two tradere's
another thing i like about these razors is they tend to shave well with any blade i have tried thus far, i believe i have use at least 4 different brands and each worked fine, as you can guess the merkur blades are still topos in my book
i really shocked myself spending this much on razors especially when i already own some top of the line shaver and i been with them so many years
after alot of thinking i realized its not too much to spend as compared to my brushes ,, i thought nothing to spend the bucks on real nice brushes so i followed and did the same with a couple razors

Marc, it's good news when you spend this much money on razors and find them to be the best yet. It's a less happy occasion when you spend that much money and you don't like the product. Congratulations on the former. It's a risk that paid off handsomely in your case, so by all means enjoy and appreciate your razors. It sounds like they were designed just for you!

thabks for the kind words Murray
yea, i still cant believe how well suited these razors are for me.
when i orginally bought my first one, i had no idea i would go crazy over this razor or that it would shave as well as it does
i really bought the first one as a gift to myself, i was just in the mood for a new toy and i loved the look and its open comb,
glad it have me much more
not because i like these razors, i would have expected these to get more interest at smf
icon, pils, feather, cobra, etc etc all raozrs in the same price range has got a lot of love why not the tradere

mike i have never used a open comb merkur razor
i have used hoffritz and merkur slants. and the same in non-slants ,, i forget the model # i think some call it 'heavy duty or HD'
also the merkur barberpoles in slant and non-slant, i love this model
and the futur
for comb opens i have used are the old and new gillettes, muhle and ikon
i like said before about the tradere though it is aggressive, it shaves so smooth
i dont feel it being agggressive i think the razor head design has a lot to do with that and its balance from handle to razor head.
actually after the shave i see and feel how well my shave went, but what really lets me know after 12 hours and longer and i still look and feel clean shaved wow wow wow
also when i say it shave smooth, no irration no weepers, even using a aftershave with alcohol the sting is very very light as compared when shaving with other barands
i have been de shaving for 36 years, my technique is pretty good i do admit
i can generally shave with any razor or blade and have good results
i have been impressed with many razors and the futur has been my all time favorite razor.. now both my tradere's are taking over.

I haven't used a Tradere, but to me, the Merkur OC is virtually if not literally identical to the Gillette Old Type OC. The blade lays flat down on the comb bar, and isn't at all aggressive, as some folks seem to think an OC razor should be. Laying the blade down on the comb bar only results in 50% of the edge being used to actually cut whiskers. Seems counter-productive to me. When the Barbasol razor was introduced around 1930 the blade layed flat on the semi-open comb. Barbasol re-designed the head to lift the blade up and put a gap between the blade and the guard a year or so later, which resulted in what I have found to be the closest shaving non-adjustable double edge razor I've ever known. That's what is now called the "floating head Barbasol".mikeny278 wrote:How does the Tradere compare to other open combs? The Merkur open comb?

i really dont want to sound like im seeling these razors for tradere
i promise you im not..
if you buy one for yourself im sure youll be glad you did and thank me for it too
all my talking about these razors has no meaning till you experience one for your self
im rotating every other day or every two days between the orignal version and the lastest version and at this point the shave from both are about the same
the newer version seems a bit less aggressive maybe both are so good it really doesnt matter

I look forward to Marc's reply. One of my favorite razors is the Merkur Progress, which I think is known for putting a significant bend in the blade.fallingwickets wrote:marc
i spoke to phil about these today....one observation he shared with me is that there is no 'bend' in the blade, making getting used to the razor and angles etc a bit of a learning experience.
what was your experience with the razor out the box?
thanks

I received a Tradere OC last week.
I've read a lot of reviews where people don't like this razor at all. I find this odd because I love the Tradere OC. It looks fantastic, build quality is outstanding, and most importantly, it gives me a very close shave without irritation. Just a wonderful tool in every respect!
In my opinion, this may well be the best DE made today. Yes, I think that highly of it.

thanks for your input Don
my feelings exactly.
my i pass along one tip to you about the tradere
i thought mine was rusting because i saw rust when i changed blades
then i thought the blades where rusting
i soon realized the top and base of the razor head kinda made a seal and any water that got in the head couldnt escape,
problem solved easy, after i use the razor and clean and dry it. i loosen the head so any water thats in the head can evaporate. i loosen it enough so it wont come apart and loose enough so i couldnt forget i need to tighten it to shave.
