Does anybody miss the old days and getting a barber Shop Shave?

Feel free to post anything unrelated to wet shaving or men's grooming (I.e. cars, watches, pens, leather goods. You know, the finer things of life).

Does anybody miss the old days and getting a barber Shop Shave?

Post by Lathermaster »

I know I'm dating myself, I haven't had a good barber shop shave in decades. I'd be afraid to go to these new hip hop barber shops for a shave. I remember the barbers I went to were 40-60 years old at the time. It was 46 years ago when I had my first barber shave and it was better than I could have imagined. LM :-)_/

Nope.
I never had a shave in a barbershop, but my current barber would be happy to give me one.

I've never had a barbershop shave, so I don't miss it.

I have gone to the same barbershop for over 35 years. They are barbers in the traditional sense, but they don't offer shaves. They do, however, shave around the ears and the back of the neck with hot lather and a straight razor (disposable blade type).

I've never had a barber shave either and I'm almost 70. (How did I ever get to be this OLD!??)

Not only do I not miss that which I never had, I don't miss the barbershops at all. I can give myself a BBS with no razor burn and I cut my own hair. In the time it takes me to only drive to a barbershop I can have my hair cut and everything cleaned up. Quicker when the weather is warm because I do it outside on the lawn where the hair contributes its N2 to the growth of the grass when it decomposes (no clean up).

I enjoyed the barbershop experience when I was a child at Joes Barbershop. The older gents, Joes age, hung out there reading the papers and chewing the fat and looking out for the kid (that'd be me). When it was my turn in the chair they made sure to pull my head out of the outdoor magazine I was reading. Joe is long since dead unless he's Methusela (sp?). That was a very long time ago. Of course I had nothing to shave back then except for the neck and sideburns. It was where I got well acquainted with bay rum.

I'm another one who's never received a shave at the hands of someone else. I have nothing against it, just never had the occasion to come up.

I searched through some old posts and found a few from October 2005. AAJC and I met at a barbershop that was located in a famous former hotel in Richmond, VA. I think that was my second barbershop shave. The old days.... I'd have to double check the post but I'm pretty sure I was hacked up a bit at that one. They were disappointed that I only wanted a shave and not a haircut. I also had a shave at the Borgata. Some people didn't seem to like the place that much but I was "ok" with it.

Almost 15 years, wow... that's a long time.

I LOVE getting a barber shop shave. I go once in awhile, sometimes I get lucky and find a decent shop. I miss the days where I was in the chair 40-60 minutes. Yes I miss the old days very much. I even write stories about it.

Same here. Probably not ever going to happen. Nobody shaves me but me, evidently. That's just me. Barbershops are for haircuts.😄

I never had one either. But on another forum they were discussing it and my take away was that I could do a better job myself.

I've had one full barber shop shave in my life (May 20, 2023) and now just a monthly clean-up of the neck and cheeks with a straight razor at the barber shop since I am now bearded.

While on vacation in Orange Beach/Gulf Shores, Alabama, it rained one day so we headed each 25 miles to Pensacola Beach where it was not raining. Ran to the downtown shopping/entertainement area and found a barber. Decided to shave my head and got a razor shave. Yes, a Shavette and not as close as what I can do. But it is nice to be pampered and they did have hot lather.

Gordon and I had talked about actual straight razors being used back when I visited him. Had to be 18 years or so ago? I mazy have a post somewhere here about our visit. There was a shop in Memphis that Elvis used to go to. As a baby attorney, it was a Friday afternoona nd I walked it and a judge saw me. Told the barber to give me the works. I was worried aobout how much it would cost me. I got a haircut, shave, skin pamering (eucalyptis oil, creams you name it, hot rag over my face and scalp) maincure and shoe shine for $25 and judge said tip him 45. Took about an hour. SHould have gone for a beer after but went back to the office - it was 3:30 or so afterall and I was still on the clock
