Shaveblog
guys,
just wondering what your general views on the shaveblog site are? it is mildly entertaining sometimes, and it has always been self-indulgent, which is perfectly all right as it is someone's personal blog. however it has recently been turning into a bit of a rant platform for the author against "shavegeeks".
quite what constitutes a "shavegeek" is of course subjective. to your average joe in the street all of us on here would all be classified as such. but to hear this stuff coming from someone who devotes a large portion of his life (and, it appears, his ego) to a self-appointed world view of shaving is a bit bizzare to say the least. the latest blog refers to 'whiny' shave forums. i have no idea what that is about. any of the discussions here on SMF I have found to be friendly, good-humoured and positive. there is also some weird tangent about "fool's gold" re: vintage razors, as if he's got his finger on the pulse and everyone else hasn't a clue. i find this strange. just my 2 cents.
maybe it's deliberately written like this to be provocative and stimulate discussion. it is of course at the end of the day just one person's views. everyone of course has (and is entitled to) an opinion. but i would be interested in finding out whether any of the rest of you read the blog and, if so, what you make of it?

I think Corey is alright, but Chris is right; he's about the biggest shavegeek of us all and should just open up and embrace his inner shavegeek and feel the Geek flow through him. I especially like it when he blogs about something he has no first hand knowledge of. It puts a smile on my face and spring in my step.

i think it's pretty well written and funny at times, the stuff about forums and geeks i just let go.
another thing i think is overstated is his readership and traffic to his blog, now his today show segment brought a lot of people into wet shaving and what not but he got started on a forum and more people these days are getting started here it than over in blog land, so it seems:

Sad really, most of his ideas come from this very forum that he ridicules. He seems to single handedly take credit for the 'wetshaving revolution' and the related ebay razor frenzy. While he plays a part, it's nowhere near the exposure this site is giving. Take a look at how many new members and posts there have been in the last 6 months alone.
However it works, the more gents that are turned on to proper shaving, the better for the whole industry. Except if you are trying to score cheap vintage razors.

Yeah, the guy can write. So can I -- with up to twice the color and as little as half the sanctimony. Looking past that, other than the tribute to Ray, I have yet to get anything from His Blogness but a vague sense of insult. I have more productive ways to spend my time -- stropping my brush comes to mind.

Not so much rip on SMF, but yes he has, forum members in general. Members seem to get their panties in a bunch and begin to argue with each other when Coey or Shaveblog is brought up. He doesn't bother me.Feldenak wrote:I take it he's ripped up SMF on his blog before?Johnnie wrote:Here we go.....Please keep this thread civil. We know what has happened in the past.

His MSNBC article did inspire me to check out wetshaving, so I am grateful for that.
Still, it seems like when he runs out of material, he turns back to making fun of the shavegeek forums, which is rather telling. It's like he's the Andrew Dice Clay of shavegeekdom.
Does anyone know where ADC is now?

I truly enjoy his writing style and humor, and I think his style acknowledges his own shavegeekiness - which is fine. I also think he has certainly made a number of valid observations and as a result has helped better my shaves in a number of areas - his initial article is what I accidently came across and how I ended up getting into all this and finding SMF. What I do not enjoy is when he goes off on the personal side - surely there must be a better way to garner attention?

You can mistrust me less than you can mistrust him. Trust me.

I didn't mean to jab at anybody in that earlier post. Andrew, James & others -- apologies if it seemed my remarks were aimed at you. They weren't. I just don't like to see people who can write well use their talent to take a superior tone.
The last thing I'd do is tell someone they should or shouldn't dig Shaveblog. I don't like it, but I hope it stays around to continue serving those who get something from it. It's no foam off my soap.

I check out the Shaveblog about once a week and I’ve found it to be interesting most of the time. My only point of contention is his habit of punctuating his blog with a word or two of profanity. The guy can write like an English Major, so I see no need for him to resort to using 4-letter words to express his point of view.
I’m probably in the minority with this pet peeve, but that’s how I feel.
