Reviving Soap

Post by Hraefn »

I have a couple pucks of soap that have dried out and they don't lather very well. How can i fix them if i can?

They don't need fixing. Only way you could ruin them is if you used to soak them so much that they got waterlogged. Even then, I'd think they should still work.

Maybe more brush strokes because the surface is so dry?

the tops of them are cracked and kinda gnarly looking.

Pretty sure the best you can do is soak them in warm water for awhile. Even if the cracks are still there the soap is more than usable after a good soak.

Blast with hot water from the shower. A strong and fine flow should help clear away the surface hardness.

Try soaking it in hot water for a minute or two then 'wash' it with a washcloth or your hands. I don't think it could possibly be ruined.

I would simply soak it for a couple of minutes to soften it before lathering. If they continue to not lather well after being softened, then I would relegate them to the shower to wash with.

Hraefn, more water in the brush will fix the problem.

You can send them to me and I'll see what I can do for you...

I'll send them back when I think they are of any further use... :D

They are fine, just dried out a little. Soak them a while in a little warm water, pour the water off and use your brush as usual. It should be fine.

If not, try my first recommendation and send them to me. I'll see what I can do (chuckle)...

Enjoy your shave... :D

I agree. Cracks don't make any difference in a soap's performance.

Cracks in soap mean nothing. Otherwise, no one would use MWF.

Today, I used a puck of Seaforth shaving soap. Which would be about 30 years old (if it's not older). Got a great shave from it.

What'd I do? Just my usual routine for soaps: a little warm water on top to soften the soap while I shower, dump it off, soap up brush.

The lather wasn't too stellar in appearance. But I got a very close, comfortable shave from it. And it smelled great.

Keep swirling the brush on it with plenty of water.

put a few tablespoons of water on top of it and let it suck up the water overnight.

I do this with Williams soap, i pour enough water to cover the entire puck, and let it sit overnight. Most, if not all, of the water is soaked into the soap by the next day.
