Geo F. Trumper Rose shaving soap
Geo F. Trumper Rose shaving soap
What are your opinions about it?
I did try it today and It was much better than I expected.Im sure that I havent tried as many soaps as Gordon or any of the fine gentlemen here, but I have tried a few so have an opinion of what I like and dont. The only 2 Trumper soaps I have tried are Coconut and Eucris.
I found this one really slick, slicker than the Eucris for sure (I was using really soft water too,so that could improve the soap slickness).Skin care wise its not like the coconut but close. Its fragrance is also soft, but remains during the whole shave.
I dont know if the puck that I have is the Potasium Palmate 1st ingredient formulation or the new Sodium Palmate 1st ingredient formulation (got the soap on a trade) but I must admit that Im nicely surprise by this soap.

I have not tried the Trumpers Rose yet. (finishing TOBS Rose first). But I have the Trumpers Violet which Is one of my favorites. The scent lasts the whole time of the shave and then some. If their Violet is any indication of the quality of product, I cannot wait to try it. Thanks for the post.

Well, we're waiting on the missive from Clive ( because Trumpers Rose hard shaving soap is pretty much all he uses...chuckle ). In the meantime I will say that I think it is, IMO, one of THE classic top of the tree shave soaps available. The scent is unique, old timey upper crust, and discreet, and I've always gotten excellent shaves from it. It is one of their oldest shave soaps, along with the Almond and the Violet, and has probably been around since Edwardian days albeit not exactly in today's formulation. We've been debating, since the onset of these shave forums, whether or not the Trumper soaps really vary at all other than their scents. Realistically it doesn't seem likely and yet many of us, myself included, seem to get slightly finer shaves with some of them than with others. For me, the Rose has consistantly been first rate. The new Eucris soap, however seems to be a distinctly different product, perhaps even made by a different supplier, and the consensus is that it definately is not as good, performance-wise, as their other six soap offerings. Mind, I've not personally tried it, but the posts here from those who have have been pretty consistant on this point.

What would they be the other classic ones,Gordon? The Harris lavender and Arlington?bernards66 wrote:Well, we're waiting on the missive from Clive ( because Trumpers Rose hard shaving soap is pretty much all he uses...chuckle ). Im agree that they might be a little bit overprice, specially when we compare it with other UK retailers like Harris, but I find the TOBS (well,I only have tried the lavender) not as slick as the Trumper ones (including the Eucris).gil3591 wrote:i'm at the other end of the spectrum. to me it's over priced. tobs soaps are just as good if not better (but no rose).
i thought the tobs lathered better. i'm not interested in products that have all kinds of veggie oils. when you can get something like arko for about $1.00 and has tallow, lathers like a champ, i just don't see how the big boys can justify their pricesTeiste wrote:Im agree that they might be a little bit overprice, specially when we compare it with other UK retailers like Harris, but I find the TOBS (well,I only have tried the lavender) not as slick as the Trumper ones (including the Eucris).gil3591 wrote:i'm at the other end of the spectrum. to me it's over priced. tobs soaps are just as good if not better (but no rose).

Good point there.I find that sometimes,we are paying the "Tradition and brand",instead of the real quality (well, this happens in basically most things these days). The Trueffit and Hill soap its a good example of it,or the new Floris:both are good soaps, but not worth (for me) the money.I have the Sienna and Nomad soaps that performs like them ,and the Cyril R Salter soap (6 bucks in Bullgooseshaving) performs even better (my personal opinion, once again).gil3591 wrote:i thought the tobs lathered better. i'm not interested in products that have all kinds of veggie oils. when you can get something like arko for about $1.00 and has tallow, lathers like a champ, i just don't see how the big boys can justify their pricesTeiste wrote:Im agree that they might be a little bit overprice, specially when we compare it with other UK retailers like Harris, but I find the TOBS (well,I only have tried the lavender) not as slick as the Trumper ones (including the Eucris).gil3591 wrote:i'm at the other end of the spectrum. to me it's over priced. tobs soaps are just as good if not better (but no rose).

Teiste, Yeah another unquestionable one is the D R Harris's Almond soap. There are several other likely candidates but those two, DRH's Almond and Trumpers Rose would be on almost anyone's list. Both are very old shave soaps with their respective firms and each is unique in terms of scent.

My favourite Trumper's soaps are the Rose and the Limes. I also have the Violet and I can't notice any difference in their performance. I also had the Sandalwood, but the fragrance irritated my skin (burning sensation).
As Gordon mentioned the new Eucris has a different soap base than the other Trumper's soaps and is similar to the new Penhaligon's formulation. Both the new EJ soaps (I have Aloe and Sandalwood) and the C&E soaps (I have Nomad) have a similar soap base to the 'classic' Trumper's soaps. And it also seems that at least the latest Floris No. 89 has a similar soap base to the Taylor soaps.

I wish I was as elegant a writer as other gentlemen on the forum are, but Im not so the WT version will have to suffice. I used tobs for over 16 years, tried nearly every other soap that has been mentioned on this forum and after all of that there is still nothing that equals trumpers rose.....not even other trumpers soaps, although sandalwood comes in close. To me its a 173 thumbs up soap that has no equal And on cost.....my last puck lasted 4 years!

And Floris JF and Elite have almost the same formulation than the C&E (Sienna and Nomad) and the EJ soaps.Flash G wrote:My favourite Trumper's soaps are the Rose and the Limes. Another one which has identical formulation than the Eucris is the Scottish Fine Soap Classic.
Oh dear, that will require more thought than whether or not to try rose soap or cream!JayTrek wrote:My wife claims she will confiscate my man card herself if I do.
IMO rose may be the single best, highest, most distinguished shaving scent of all! It combines well with MWF, by which I mean that if you load the brush with Mitchell's Wool Fat soap, then put a daub of rose cream on your face or in the bowl, and lather with both soap and cream, the result is special. But so also are other rose incarnations, including the legendary Trumpers soap and cream, Bulgarian rose otto, Fitjar sweetgrass cream (mainly palmarosa scent, unfortunately unavailable), etc etc. I suggest that you smuggle in a sample and then just allow the missus to sniff your chin…
