Having to say goodbye to my favorite razor....

This morning I broke my favorite amd most sentimental razor. It was one of my first DE razors and
was the first that came with it's original box or case and the date code has personal meaning as it the birth year and quarter of someone I care about. I got my son a matching twin to this razor and it too has it's box. I acquired his razor around the same time. He was only a baby back then, but I was planning for the future.

(Here it is back in it's original box. It looks like it has been laid in a coffin)
I was looking forward to shaving this morning and loaded up my, most dependable and possibly favorite razor, the (
Gillette Tech 1958 (D2) 3-piece ball end) with a new
Wizamet Super Iridium blade.
Things were going quite well, excellent lather, gentle razor, new blade, everything was going...quite well indeed. But, then it happened. My hands must have been slippery from a little lather and I dropped my most beloved razor. It hit the countertop, but I wasn't too worried as these 3-piece Techs seem unbreakable, right? Well when I went to pick it up to finish my ATG pass, the head was no longer attached. The threading was snapped off and still in the handle. I am still in a bit of shock over this.
The new custom made case I just ordered for this razor hasn't even arrived yet and now it is gone.

Tim,
Wow, that's incredible. I'd also think such razor were indestructible.
I wonder if metal fatigue had anything to do with it. Maybe over it's lifetime it got over-tightened too many times?
I have a razor like that (three piece) from my dad. Even though I rarely use a DE I'd still be heartbroken should it snap like that on me.
Hope you find something suitable as a replacement.
Chris

My condolences, Tim. That is a loss.
A Tech was my go-to razor for a number of years. In fact, I have a few of them.
(I just went through all my Techs, and I found none with a D2 date code. In fact, most of mine predate said codes. I also favored the thick-handled models.)
- Murray
Edit: Tim, I have two ball-end Techs, both in their original cardboard boxes and with the original tuck of blades.
The gold one shows some wear to the box and minor shallow blemishes to the gold (like little rub marks, possibly from bouncing around in the box). It has the original paper insert between the handle and the head, suggesting that it is NOS. It has no date code.
The silver one looks brand new and has a K4 date code. Printed on the box: GIFT of the AMERICAN RED CROSS. NOT TO BE SOLD.
If you would like one of these, I would be happy to send it to you to ease the pain of your loss. Sorry I don't have a D2.

Tim, in this hobby it seems we've all experienced the passing of one old or new shaving article or another. It happens and suddenly a replacement pops up and we quickly find something else.
That's the way it works.Truthfully, that's the beautiful thing about having and using all of this new/old stuff.
In my case, I went through about a dozen safety razors and about 20 old (and new) straight razors before I stumbled onto the (razor) love of my life. The second generation General from Colonial.
You're inevitably going to find the best-performing razor that you've ever used. I know it!
Of course, I have a backup just in case.
Best wishes!

Murray,
Thank you for that most generous offer. I do have a few other razors to use, but it was a quite a disappointing surprise to lose
that razor so suddenly and unexpectedly as it happened. Also the sentimental aspect of it too.
In fact I ordered another D2 tech from the 'bay Friday morning after my razor became broken (only one available at the time, lucky find I suppose in the timing). It also comes with some of those new King C Gillette blades to try. Based on the photos, the base plate has some cosmetic issues and possible pitting. But, I think I will swap it out for the one I have and at least part of my old razor can still be in service. Besides, it does not have an original box or anything either, but I intend it use it and try not to get too attached to this one. It should be here in just over a week, so we will see.
Among my razors, the Tech was a bit unique in it was so easy to use and could get under the nose closer and more thoroughly with it's smaller head profile. It worked with just about any blade, even ones I disliked in other razors.
I have a variety of other types of DE razors, but the Tech stood out. It was not necessarily better, but different.

Sorry to hear it. From the fracture surface, it looks like classic stress corrosion cracking. You could keep the baseplate and handle and just sub a replacement top cap. Then it would be at least 2/3 original.

It also occurs to me that when Gillette made these razors, they didn't expect them to last or be in use for anywhere near this long!
