I'll be 26 in a week and I have never been drunk. I don't drink actually and what other people do is there own business, but still, I've wondered why some people drink simply to get drunk.

I think there's two types of people. There's those like myself that enjoy fine wine, liquor, or beers because they appreciate the quality and flavor, intoxication happens to be a rather pleasant side effect. Like with a good cigar, I don't smoke because I crave nicotine, I smoke because I love craftsmanship of the cigar itself and the complex flavors.

Then there are the people that drink simply to get drunk. This I don't understand either. Choking down cheap foul tasting alcohol just to get drunk is pretty pointless to me.

The last time I was hammered was the weekend before my ETS from the Army. Went to Austin with the guys, 6th street. I couldn't get up the next day. That was Oct 1995.
I used to drink to excess. That was from about age 21 to 23 or so.

I've been known to have a Margarita on occasion, but as I'm usually armed, I plain don't drink.

So the short answer, which as it turns out was not short, is after one drink, it seems. I woud say mostly due to my size and intolerance of my system.

The last time was about 15 years ago. After work, a group of us went to the wineries in Augusta, Missouri. My husband joined us as did a lot of the other "half's". So there were quite a few of us.

No one had had dinner so we bought cheese curds, snacks and tested endless wimes. It was a beatuful evening and one of the guys found the torso of a mannequin, where I don't know??? Tossing the mannequin a few times led to all the guys playing football with this rediculous beat up female mannequin torso.

It was hilarious to watch the guys, and became funnier and funnier to us gals as they kept the wine coming, now in bottles instead of little tasting cups.

I am sure I had the 'headache from hell' the next day. Now no more than a glass or two of wine with dinner :)

I think the wine drunks are the worse Sue. I remember those 24 hour headaches. When I was in college, and then later in the Army we drank to get drunk. Mostly it was Saturday nights and we drank whatever cheap or FREE alcohol we could find. Once there was a case of wine that was left over from a dinner party that was brought to our barracks. I'm pretty sure it wasn't great vintage stuff. Four of us WAR HEROES polished off this case of wine in the course of a few hours. I spent all day Sunday heaving my guts out and having the headache from hell. I could finally see straight by Monday morning.

Dot has only been drunk once that I can remember, in the 36 years we have been married . It was also from drinking wine. It was at my brother Dom's wedding and I am certain she polished off at least a bottle by herself. She still claims she had the Flu and wasn't drunk.... Ya Right

I no longer get drunk. My face may get red and my eyes may look weird, but I'm not DRUNK.

There was that one time in college at a halloween party where I passed out and woke up dressed like Frankenfurter... I'm pretty sure *that* qualifies as drunk.

Fortunately the more I drink the less I want to drink, so if I want to get drunk I have to set out to do it, and do it in a hurry (hurricanes and long island iced tea works great for this).

I've never had a hangover. Amazing. Ren, you make a good point. I have sleep apnea, and I know that getting behind the wheel is a crap shoot.

Definition of drunkenness

Post by lux »

Hello fellow wet shavers,

The Swiss Traffic Code defines drunkenness as testing 0.5 per mille or more alcohol content in the blood. The penalties for drunken driving are revocation of the driving licence (permanently in some repetitive cases) and a stiff fine. Currently, the Swiss federal government has proposed a nil per mille limit for drivers under 25 years of age in view of the significantly higher frequency of drunken driving in this age group.

Fortunately, I do not posess a motor vehicle so I remain unaffected by this and by increasing petrol prices.

Kind regards,

lux

Hell, drunk for purposes of law (at least drunk driving, as opposed to say drunk in public) or safely engaging in dangerous activities, is a whole different story from drunk as a general concept.

It's really semantics, actually.

My theory though, with all due respect to Tony, is that is someone else can tell you have been drinking, other than by your breath, you're drunk.

This is distinct from say Piss Drunk, Smashed, Hammered, Puke Drunk, Wasted, Staggering Drunk, etc.

The Value of a Drink
"Sometimes when I reflect back on all the wine I drink
I feel shame. Then I look into the glass and think
about the workers in the vineyards and all of their hopes
and dreams .. If I didn't drink this wine, they might be out
of work and their dreams would be shattered.
Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this wine and let their
dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."

And saving the best for last, as explained by Cliff Clavin,of Cheers.
One afternoon at Cheers, Cliff Clavin was explaining the Buffalo Theory to his buddy Norm.

Here's how it went:
"Well ya see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

In the old days, to quote Joe Walsh..." the smoker ya drink, the player ya get! It's been many years since I have been drunk. almost 12 now. The kicker for me was when I started hitting on our lesbian friend in front of my wife.... yep I am a class act! My wife still teases me about that... all I can say is .. "hey at least there was no chance of it going anywhere"... to which she replies.... chuckling...."like there ever is!" She is so good for my ego..

Mike,

I agree with you about drinking to get drunk, I never understood that. I have recently given up going downtown on the weekends to take a date out to eat, mainly because by 11:30 I will be tripping over drunk high school and college kids. Canada is even worse because of the lower drinking age, I live in a suburb of Buffalo so one of the big pastimes around here is to drink to the point when walking is impossible.

Also you have all proved my sociology paper correct! I do not see anyone coming out in support of drunk driving, which is a major turn around from when my parents were in high school (the 1960s and 1970s) when it was considered the norm to drive home no matter how few or many drinks you had.

I would say that drunk is close to out of control of yourself/actions/mouth/bodily fluids.

I drank 1/3 a bottle of makers mark on ice and had a good fade going on but wasn't drunk. Legally? Maybe.

There are probably 10 degrees to getting blasted

buzzed, faded, swerved, drunk, blasted, annihilated, and the ultimate is passed out with bodily fluids covering your body.

I don't drink that often. When I do, it's usually a finely crafted beer or a top-shelf single-malt Scotch or small-batch Bourbon. However, I was in Atlanta a couple of weeks ago at a friend's house, and he brought a bottle of J&B onto the porch. I probably put away 1/2 of that bottle in the course of a couple of hours. Was I drunk? Sure, but not so much that I was falling over or slurring my speech. I drank several glasses of water to head off any potential for hangover and then went to bed.

My wife and I split a bottle of Konzelmann Vineyards Riesling Traminer the other night-- a perfect match to the strong curry we enjoyed.

These days, I really feel a half bottle of wine.

Once, for a camping trip, I really made a serious mistake loading up on barleywine instead of beer. Tastes like beer, drinks like beer, kicks like 3 beers!

After a rough day of fishing, I enjoyed three of these puppies before I realized how hard it kicked. Then I broke out the Maker's Mark. Then the North Carolinians I was with broke out the Mason jars. Then another buddy broke out the Herradura Anejo. At that point, we had to break the cap to open the bottle. Things get a little fuzzy after that, though.

Honest, I think that would kill me today.

LOL! I had a beer surprise one time that really should have been predicted. I was sitting in my recliner, drinking from a HUGE mug full of Gouden Carolus D'Or (Cuvée Van De Keizer), a Belgian strong dark ale that weighs in at 11% ABV. It's so damn tasty that I drank a whole lot of it in a very short time. I then sat in amazement as my buzz quickly deepened.
