Palmolive

Post by Carrington »

I got a tube of Palmolive today, read the directions, and used it. Still I felt like I was missing something. Could someone walk me through the correct way to use it?

You might be using too much cream. Just use about an almond size amount of cream in your bowl. Then shake some of the excess water out of your clean brush and lather away. It's always better to start out with too little water in your brush than too much.

After you're done whipping up the lather, spread it on your beard. I've never actually followed Palmolive's directions, but Pete (ouchmychin) has followed the directions and he gets good shaves from it. For me, I drop the soaping up step.

I agree with Rob. If you can't get good lather from Palmolive, something is wrong. I can get great Palmolive lather with raw sewage and a dead squirrel. I would start by adding more water. I am really surprised at how much water my creams and soaps can take. Good luck, and hang in there.

I'm dissatisfied with my capybara-hair brush. I'll have to give this dead squirrel thing a try. :P

In my experience, it doesn't make much of a difference what kind of lather you generate with Palmolive. It's the most forgiving product I've encountered. If you can get it on your face, it will shave you well.

I agree, although I have never used Palmolive, I am sure it would be the same as Musgo Real or Proraso.

I wish I could. No CVS in Memphis and our Walgreens do not carry it :(

How about a Sav-On? Heck, I've even seen it in a couple grocery stores.

Palmolive is a great product. The first time I tried it, I couldn't get a decent lather, but after a couple attempts it was easy. I think my initial problem was I diddn't use enough water (It seems to need a bit more than regular soap). It also sometimes takes a bit longer to lather than many soaps. I'd definitely keep trying, it's a really great product.

Today I had my first what I would call successful shave with Palmolive. I put some in my bowl, added water and created a lather with my brush. Now the problem was I had an extremely thin lather and it all sat on top of the water instead of mixing together. Is this normal? And what can I do to improve this?

Try lathering directly on your face. Just a dab on either side, slightly wet brush, and start whipping. You should have a fine lather in a very short time. BTW, when I say dab, I mean a little bigger than almond-sized, say, the size of a filbert :D Let me know if this works for you. Vic

Sounds to me like you're using way, way, way too much water. Or not? I can't think of how this would happen.

Yeah could be too much water. I think tomorrow I'll go with prism's idea of lathering directly on my face and skip the bowl.

Difference between European and US Palmolive shave cream?

Post by Minstrel »

What is the difference between the European Palmolive shave cream in the green metal tube and the US Palmolive cream? I have only used the former, and the lime-green cream has a pretty nice smell. Someone said that the US Palmolive cream smells like detergent, so my guess is that the smell isn't the same, at least. Anyone out there who has used both and can make a comparison of the two?

[Edit] I just read that the European version smells nicer, but it would still be interesting with a more detailed comparison. Anyone? :)

I can't find much of a difference between the European or US Palmolives. I do enjoy the European Palmolive's smell better, too.

Does the European version contain mineral oil? It's the only thing that's keeping me from buying the US version of Palmolive.

According to the box, the European Palmolive cream contains: Aqua, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Glycerin, Potassium Hydroxide, Coconut Acid, Cocos Nucifera, Sodium Hydroxide, Parfum, Sodium Borate, Potassium Chloride, Sodium Silicate, CI 15985, CI 42051, CI 45350, CI 47005.

I have no idea what the last four things are.

[Edit] Apparently they are food dyes/colorings.

Much better ingredients. Where do people find it if ordering from the states?

If anyone could find a place to order it online, I'd be interested to know as well, since I've only found it in one place in my home town, at the only old style barber shop in town (and they don't have a huge selection of wetshaving products). I bought the last tube they had last week when I happened to be in town...
