And they all pretend they're Orphans
And their memory's like a train
You can see it getting smaller as it pulls away
And the things you can't remember
Tell the things you can't forget that
History puts a saint in every dream
--Tom Waits "Time"
------------------------------
We sit together drunk like our fathers used to be
I'm looking up at God who's saying "What are you gonna do?"
I'm looking up and crying 'cause "I thought it was up to You!"
--The Gun Club "She's Like Heroin to Me"
------------------------------
Then I realized I was only drunk
And the years had slipped away
And I felt like a widower stoned and watching
A film of his wedding day
--Thin White Rope "The Ghost"
And their memory's like a train
You can see it getting smaller as it pulls away
And the things you can't remember
Tell the things you can't forget that
History puts a saint in every dream

As I've always said
I prefer your lips red.
Not what the good Lord made
but what he intended.
I awoke in a fever
the bedclothes were all soaked in sweat.
She said "you've been having a nightmare,
but it's not over yet."

I gauged the fire, I'd seen bigger
So I ordered them to sidehill and we'd fight it from below
We'd have our backs to the river
We'd have it licked by morning even if we took it slow
But the fire crowned, jumped the valley just ahead
There was no way down, headed for the ridge instead
Too big to fight it, we'd have to fight that slope instead
Flames one step behind above the cold Missouri waters
Sky had turned red, smoke was boiling
Two hundred yards to safety, death was fifty yards behind
I don't know why I just thought it
I struck a match to waist high grass running out of time
Tried to tell them, Step into this fire I set
We can't make it, this is the only chance you'll get
But they cursed me, ran for the rocks above instead
I lay face down and prayed above the cold Missouri waters
"where the struggle between mountains and plains came face to face."

Big Punisher - Sex, Money and Drugs
A verse from the song:
"It's hard holdin on, singin the words to the same song
Remainin strong through the storm but the rain is long
The pain is gone only when I sleep
But even then when I'm in it deep I dream that I'm bein beat
I seen the beast take life and say he had a knife
The truth was, he had a wife who never even had a fight
It's paradise for some and hell for others, they tell us
They love us long as we kill our brothers and stay out the suburbs
These mother**ers think we dumb and blind, but there come
A time in life when I gotta fight for what is mine
So I'ma shine summertime hard, feel me rhyme God
Alter your light table like a tripod, it's type hard
So you need to listen, if you puffin weed or sniffin
Mother**ers always gonna treat you different
Play your position, don't get caught up in the game
Cause snortin cocaine, is like feedin pork to the brain
Get it together"

If you think I'm gonna sing a song
You're right, I am
That's how uptight I am
Since you've been gone I've got the blues
Don't know what else to do
But sing a song of losing you
And maybe one of these days I'll find
The garbage can I'm lookin' for
And throw myself away
Throw myself away
Take me to the dump
Toss me on the heap
And in a week I'll smell so bad
Anyone comin' to see me will have to hold their nose
But you'll come out like you always do
Smellin' like a rose

Matt, thanks for posting this! I happened to hear that interview on NPR a few weeks ago. The guy lit the fire and told his guys to step into the fire but they cursed him and ran away. He miraculously survived, but they didn't make it. It's an amazing story. The guy that wrote and sang the song about it did good.matt321 wrote:"Cold Missouri Waters" by James Keelaghan (about the 1949 Mann Gulch Fire tragedy)

Nothin' But A Woman
(Robert Cray)
You can give me an hour alone in a bank
Pay all my tickets, wipe the slate blank
You could buy me a car, fill up the tank
Tell me a boat full of lawyers just sank
But it ain't nothin' but a woman
Nothin' but a woman, no, no
Don't need nothin' but a woman
Any time I'm feelin' low
Well, you could fly us to Dallas on a jumbo-jet plane
If we run late and miss it, we can take the night train
When the pressure is on, things getting insane
Only one cure for that kind of strain
It ain't nothin' but a woman
Nothin' but a woman, no, no
Don't need nothin' but a woman, yeah, yeah
To get me through the show
Yeah, you can make me a bet, give me a ten-point spread
Give me french brandy that will clear my head
When it's all over, feeling half-dead
Only one thing, just like I said
It ain't nothin' but a woman
Nothin' but a woman, yeah, yeah
Any time I got a woman
Things can't be too bad
You can buy me a house, turn over the deed
Bring six pounds of California weed
But my weakness ain't drugs, whiskey, or greed
Only one thing that YOUNG BOB needs
It ain't nothin' but a woman
Nothin' but a woman
Yeah, you right
Ain't nothin' but a woman to get me through the night

Well, I lay my head on the railroad tracks
Waitin' on the Double "E"
But the train don't run by here no more
Poor, poor pitiful me..
Well, I met a girl in West Hollywood
Now, I ain't naming names
She really worked me over good
just like Jesse James
Well, she really worked me over good
She was a credit to her gender
Put me through some changes, Lord
Kind of like a Waring blender..

Well, Wendell, you got me going thinking about great Bruce lines. Here are a few:
"Well if you didn't look then, boys/Then fellas don't go lookin' now
Well here she comes a'walkin'/All that heaven will allow"
"Me and Frankie laughin' and drinkin'/Nothin' feels better than blood on blood"
"Rising from a long night as dark as the grave
On a thin chain of next moments and something like faith"
"Should we lose each other in the shadow of the evening trees
I'll wait for you/And should I fall behind/Wait for me"
"Is a dream a lie if it don't come true/Or is it something worse"
"Still at the end of every hard-earned day/People find some reason to believe"
And I know this is a thread of one-liners (theoretically), but this whole song breaks me up every damn time:
"One Step Up"
Woke up this morning my house was cold
Checked out the furnace she wasn't burnin'
Went out and hopped in my old Ford
Hit the engine but she ain't turnin'
We've given each other some hard lessons lately
But we ain't learnin'
We're the same sad story that's a fact
One step up and two steps back
Bird on a wire outside my motel room
But he ain't singin'
Girl in white outside a church in June
But the church bells they ain't ringing
I'm sittin' here in this bar tonight
But all I'm thinkin' is
I'm the same old story same old act
One step up and two steps back
It's the same thing night on night
Who's wrong baby who's right
Another fight and I slam the door on
Another battle in our dirty little war
When I look at myself I don't see
The man I wanted to be
Somewhere along the line I slipped off track
I'm caught movin' one step up and two steps back
There's a girl across the bar
I get the message she's sendin'
Mmm she ain't lookin' to married
And me well honey I'm pretending
Last night I dreamed I held you in my arms
The music was never-ending
We danced as the evening sky faded to black
One step up and two steps back
Regards,

And since I already violated the premise of one-liners, here's my favorite Townes Van Zandt song:
I used to wake and run with the moon
I lived like a rake and a young man
I covered my lovers with flowers and wounds
my laughter the devil would frighten
The sun she would come and beat me back down
but every cruel day had its nightfall
I'd welcome the stars with wine and guitars
full of fire and forgetful
My body was sharp the dark air clean
and outrage my joyful companion
whisperin' women how sweet did they seem
kneelin' for me to command them
And time was like water but I was the sea
I'd have never noticed it passin'
except for the turnin' of night into day
and the turnin' of day into cursin'
You look at me now, and don't think I don't know
what all your eyes are a sayin'
Does he want us to believe these ravings and lies
they're just tricks that his brains been a playin'?
A lover of women he can't hardly stand
he trembles he's bent and he's broken
I've fallen it's true but I say unto you
hold your tongues until after I've spoken
I was takin' my pride in the pleasures I'd known
I laughed and thought I'd be forgiven
but my laughter turned 'round eyes blazing and
said my friend, we're holdin' a wedding
I buried my face but it spoke once again
the night to the day we're a bindin'
and now the dark air is like fire on my skin
and even the moonlight is blinding
I used to wake and run with the moon
I lived like a rake and a young man
I covered my lovers with flowers and wounds
