What kind of shaving brush do you use? Tell us all about it!

Sam wrote:Peter what size is that large Beehive? One might consider an XL Shavemac brush, which is 30mm knot I believe and just decadent on the face.
Here are the specs Sam:

TH 22 cm
HH 11,3 cm
LH 10,7 cm
KD 60 mm
weight 972 gr.

Quite a behemoth if i may so..
Peter, I'm sadly lacking in brush knowledge. I confess I can't decipher your code, TH,HH, etc. I can't figure out how large that big Rooney is.

i'm with chris on this one. a chubby is too dense. you want a thater! best knot and hair i ever experienced. after that,, a big knotted savile.
Gil, once upon a time I was on a mission to get a big Thater, and I am here to report that nowhere to be found is a comprehensive listing of available Thater sizes and specifications, and even retail sources. For that reason, I was sadly disappointed when it became evident that Thater was an impossible source for a big brush. Edit: I must say clearly that I did inquire through a well known vendor about what Thater offered in large brushes, and I never did receive a clear response.

Good suggestion on the Saville Row big brushes from QED. Those are still on my radar, at a price of around $200 or more, quite a reach.

well gary, your post puzzles me. i seem to remember when i was looking at thaters i had no trouble finding sizes posted. do you mean the vendors didn't post a loft, handle and knot size? sometimes all three are not posted but if you get an overall length and a loft or handle size you can figure out the missing piece of the puzzle.

Yeah, it's old news, but I wanted to know how big they made them (loft), and if so what was the model # and where to buy it. Couldn't get any of those 3 bits of information, and I'm a pretty fair "googlist".

Then there's the Professional Shaving brush No. 1 at bestshave.net.

Loft is 68mm, knot 29mm, posted in his listing.

Some guys who've tried it say it's too big for a face, but good for heads and women's legs.

Love the pic of the Rooney. Saw one for real in fortnum and Mason. That brush is huge.

I saw you used an Omega 49. I had a 48 and swapped it for a smaller one. I miss that brush.

I'm impressed that you want a bigger one.
Alan

I went to the avatar shop but they'd sold out!!

Not to drp's standards but I like playing around. Here's a couple I made in 2 band finest. 28mm & 30mm. I like big brushes.

Re: Very large brushes

nelson wrote:I'm not a brush expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I do own and enjoy using occasionally a Shavemac 220 with a 28 mm knot and sivertip badger hair (as defined by Shavemac). I bought that rascal back in the day when Shavemac was commisioned to design and supply the first SMF brush. It's still available from Shavemac. Once fully loaded with water and cream it can service an army. What appears to be the same brush is also available from qedusa as the Savile Row 3128. One advantage of ordering from Charles at qedusa is that you don't have to worry about the brush clearing Customs. Charles has taken care of that potential headache for you.

In general, if you want a genuinely large brush with pretty high grade badger hair at a tolerable price, I think your best bets are from Shavemac and Savile Row.

nelson
I recently came into possession of a Shavemac 220, quite unintentionally. That brush seems to be just about perfect, and yes, it's still offered through Shavemac. If one is looking for a big well-made brush at a fair price, check out the Shavemac 220.

I have a nice Shavemac 227 30mm. It's a superb brush but I just don't use it that much. I am thinking about putting it on the martket, but I am not in a hurry.
