The end of Tabac original formulation
The end of Tabac original formulation
Got an email from Phill at BG Shaving announcing the reformulation of Tabac.Unfortunately he's already sold out of the refills but you can still get the nifty bowl with soap. I picked up a refill at WC Shaving. Not cheap but it's the last of its kind.

Re: The end of Tabac original formulation
The manufacturer of the soap base used by Maurer and Wirtz went out of business. That took down Tabac and also the Fine brand of shaving soaps. I believe that was announced last December.

Re: The end of Tabac original formulation
I picked up three tallow-based refill pucks shortly after this New Year. I packed all of them into a vacuum bag. With my current puck (mostly new) I should be good for 8-10 years.
Can’t remember if I went through Fendrihan’s or Top of the Chain.

Re: The end of Tabac original formulation
I assume the Fine soaps (Deutsch) and Fine aftershaves (USA) are not related. I enjoy the latter with their minimal ingredients. Very clean.

Re: The end of Tabac original formulation
I think the Fine brand is US-based, although the soaps were made in Germany, and are now made in Italy.

That is too bad. But things change.
Who makes a tallow base soap now?

To name a few current tallow shaving soaps
PB made in England
D.R. Harris
Cyril Salter
Mitchell's Woolfat
Yes, I have used all of these soaps.
Probably more containing tallow for those who are interested.
See my post in the Shopping forum.

Thanks Gary. There are some tallow TABAC offerings on eBay.

Re: The end of Tabac original formulation
I loved Tabac back when I was using straights. I have an artisan soap my daughter got me and when used up, I am seeking out a new soap, and will consider Tabac if not too pricey
Got me one last bar of the Mitchell's Wool Fat soap for the face

Sam,
I like Mitchell's in the colder months, when my skin is drier.
I love the old TABAC but have not tried the new formulation, and probably won't unless there is a positive review someplace by an experienced, knowledgeable shaver.
Thanks,
Roger

Just FYI I have two brand new, in the box, refill pucks of the original tallow Tabac soap if anyone is interested in purchasing.
Re: The end of Tabac original formulation
I'd be interested in one. Send PM and we'll chat. Tks.

Re: The end of Tabac original formulation
Is it just me, or do some among you agree with me that the importance (or rather lack) of tallow is largely overstated?
If a manufacturer drops tallow and reformulates a shaving soap that is tallow-free it is not the end of the world for me and I am not ‘devastated’.
Haslinger did a good job when they dropped tallow around 2017 and their product is still excellent.
There are also other excellent vegetable-based shaving soaps and some not so good tallow-based ones.
If the proof of the pudding is in the eating, then the proof of the shaving soap is in the shave - and some non-tallow ones are very good indeed…

Re: The end of Tabac original formulation
Joris is a prime example of your point. I don't know if it ever contained tallow. This stuff is as good as any.
Also, there was a time that D.R. Harris did contain tallow somewhere in the ingredients, and the lather (my own personal opinion - others may differ ) was mediocre. Nowadays the recently re-formulated Harris containing tallow is much better than before when it also contained tallow. It's all a matter of science and chemistry, and probably government regulations related to an exercise of obtaining and accumulating power and money. Aren't we lucky we have very expensive governments that appear to give a rats a** about whether or not we apply tallow (what the heck is tallow???) to a few square inches of our body once in a while. Did they outlaw the use of tallow in hand soap or other substances that humans apply to their skin? I call BS on the whole tallow issue. There really isn't such a thing as tallow's record of somehow causing death and destruction. If this is true, why hasn't the "government" forbidden us permitting our body
to come into contact with stuff like Jack Daniels or Jameson, Jose Cuervo, etc.??? Again - BS Cheers! Have a great day brothers!
