Introducing my son to a proper shave (brushes)

Post by nodaktim »

A couple of years ago my son started shaving. I gave him a 1958 (D2) 3-piece ball end Tech and some Gillette Nacet blades. He had no interest in learning about brushes, creams, soaps etc, but used Barbasol and Proraso in the canned variety.

At least he took my advice and stayed away from the canned gels and such.

Recently, I found my box of shaving gear that was put away by SWMBO when I went OTR. It had some cologne samples from Penhaligon's, my other brushes, some creams and soaps. He was now more willing to give a brush a try, but wanted to stay with Proraso cream, as it was familiar, though different from the canned version. Years ago I had put away a second Proraso / Omega brush I had acquired from Target, when they briefly carried Proaso items. This was the first brush I used back then, and his was still in the box waiting for him. He was concerned about the 'wet dog' or more accurately, 'wet pig' smell, so we made a couple of practice lathers with the Proraso cream to tame it. I don't know if he will continue with it going forward, but I did also give him an EJ Best badger I bought for him years ago too. It is an imitation ebony handled version of my first badger with an imitation tortoise shell handle.

I found this image on Amazon of the same model (1EJ876). It is a 21mm knot. medium sized brush. He has not tried it yet, but I hope he will soon.

Today me son decided to try out his first badger brush as seen above. Against my advice of only changing one item in his setup at a time, he also decided to try the D. R. Harris Sandalwood too. He did notice the distinct 'wet badger' scent, but says it was not as strong as the boar and seemed to fade quicker. I assured him it will pass as he uses it a few times.

All in all the shave seemed to go well, (he didn't offer many details) but it took longer than he expected. Again, with practice and more shaves it will go quicker with experience.

As I peer over the edge of the mortal coil I have given my son many of my treasures. These inlude an ivory Chubby 3 purchased many years ago from Trumper, and an unused #24 Plisson HMW (black collar) set in plexi which may actually be too big to use. I retained my #22 with which I may be buried.
