Synthetic knots

Post by cpool222 »

Anyone have an idea of the best place to buy synthetic knots these days? Also, entertaining opinions about which synthetic knots may be better than others. Thanks!

You will want to go to APShaveCo. I've bought several synthetics from him. SynBad and SilkSmoke are my favorites, but that's just me. His website shows dozens of styles. He has knots as well as handles. He also deals in several products as well as knots. Good luck!

Thanks for the recommendation, brothers! I'll definitely check out APShaveCo. I've been looking for a good source for synthetic knots and it's great to get a personal endorsement. SynBad and SilkSmoke sound interesting - what is it about them that you like?

We all have our experiences and such, but in this case, I like the lightly gray smoky look of the SilkSmoke, and I like the design. Regarding SynBad,it's a bit tighter packed than the SilkSmoke and since I am using it (SynBad) in a beautiful brown stained handle, the brown color of the SynBad is a perfect match. Currently I've got the SynBad in my small brush rotation and giving the SilkSmoke a rest.

I’ve tried about a dozen synthetics across the price spectrum. The only one I find satisfying is the AP Shave Co SynBad. I lather exclusively on my face using circular and paint brush strokes both of which the SynBad does well. What I really like about the SynBad is that it does not have the springy feel of all the other synthetics I’ve tried and it splays more easily too.

Gary,
It has been more than a year since this post about the APShaveCo Synbad and SilkSmoke brushes. Any updates on your opinion of them with more use in that time? I am considering a Synth brush for the first time. I think it might be good for traveling or to carry with for when I am out with my work truck over night etc I missed using a brush when I was gone, but did not want to risk my brushes over-the-road.

Some years back I bought three synthetic brushes, but found them lacking. But now I have more brushes than I can possibly use, so I'll just use what I have. I see that even Simpson have an extensive range of two different kinds of synthetic hair. Semper aliquid novum sub sole!

Tim, synthetic brushes definitely have their own performance characteristics, and you need to adjust to them. In my experience, since all the synthetic fibers tend to bend the same way, a denser loft is desirable.

Synthetic brushes dry very quickly, however, making them ideal for travel.

Currently I love the way the SynBad feels and performs in the 4-brush (3 badger 1 synthetic) rotation. The longer I use them I find myself actually looking forward to the SynBad. Not so much regarding the badgers.
