Let's talk about single and double edged razors and the blades that they use.

Identifying a few of my razors...

Post by nodaktim »

Going through the box from storage I found a few razors I had collected years ago. I went online for more information about them. According to this website (mr-razor) the information I had was incorrect. It is a website that seems useful to identify razors and blades plus other information such as history etc
My Aristocrat was thought to be a #16, but now I think it might be a #15, (if I understand this website correctly).
.
Here is a couple of photos of my razor.

The following image is from his website showing the ( Aristocrat #15 ) as seen below:

Another razor I had incorrect is my a Gillette #58 seen below:
1956 Gillette No58 open.jpg

.
.
I thought it was from 1953, but according to ( 1953 model ) the 1953 model was aluminum.

There seems to be 2 other models of the Gillette No.58 razor, one from 1955 and one from 1956. The ( 1955 model ). does NOT have the loop for holding the razor inside the case as seen below:

.
The best I can tell, my razor is a ( 1956 model ). as it does have the loop for holding the razor inside the case as seen below:

.
.
In summary, it seems I have a Gillete Aristocrat #15 from 1948 and a Gillete No.58 from 1956. Please, let me know if you have any other information about these razors or if something needs to be corrected.

This one seems to be an "Aristocrat Junior". I first thought it was a "Rocket" but mine has the patent number 430.030 and not "patent pending", though I am not sure of the year (1948, 1949 or another year) Here is my razor as seen below:

This photo shows the patent number 430.030 on the underside of the razor's head.

Could it be the ( 1948 Aristocrat Junior ) or maybe one of the 1949 models? I don't think it is from 1948, as the handle is hollow and mine is solid.

I found two models from 1949 and the razors seem to be the same unless (I failed to notice a detail). The only difference I see in the two 1949 models is the packaging etc. I have no case, box, blades or anything else to help identify my razor though. So it could be this ( ONE ) or maybe this one shown ( HERE ).

Either way I will call it a 1949 Aristocrat Junior, unless more information comes to light

Again, any more information would be appreciated.

According to ( HERE ) it appears to be possibly be from 1934. But even the website is not sure.

Interesting, Tim.

I have three American Aristocrats that are all gold. In fact, until now, I have only seen Aristocrats in gold.

I have a British Rocket in it original polystyrene case. It looks very similar to your illustration of a British Aristocrat Junior, but the handle is very slightly different and it is imprinted "Patent Pending." Its case also looks different from any you have illustrated, with a light blue tray and a hinged clear top.

My Rocket is a very pleasant mild shaver, with a more substantial feel than a Super Speed.

Murray,

[Click] on his link ( Rasierer / razors ). It is to the appropriate page on his website. [Click] on the image that matches your razor and it will go to the corresponding larger image like the examples above. Ì would like to know more about your razors too. I find these vintage razors and their history fascinating.

Does this match your razor? ( HERE )? The link leads to the following image:

Thanks for that, Tim!

Yes, the last link you provided for the 1953-1954 Rocket looks just like mine. That is more than I knew about it.

As I said before, my Rocket is a mild shaver. My early postwar Aristocrats (one 1947, and the other 1948 - 1950), though different from each other, are both rather aggressive. They might even be more aggressive than the red-tip Super Speed.

You are most welcome, Murray. I am glad I could help.

Many years ago when I was very, very actively chasing razors, this is one that kept eluding me. Many members, especially Gordon, kept extoling it's virtues. I made several attempts to get one, but all for not. Either I missed an opportunity, got out bid or received a different razor after taking a chance on bidding on what appeared to be one. I often took the risk with listings that had poor photos and a seller that did not know enough about it to answer questions. That is how I ended up with the other razors such as the ultra-light 'paper clip' made from aluminum seen in this thread
( Gillette HD Rocket? ID please... ). I sold that one Charlie (gatorade). His review of it can be seen ( HERE ).

Maybe, if the mood strikes me I will resume chasing one. But, for now I have a small collection of razors to use.
