SOTD: June 2026

Post by brothers »

Hello Summer! I love the heat.

. . .

This morning was fun due to the fact that I'm the proud owner of three (3) new brushless shaving creams.

1st Shaving Cream - Warrior Kingdom Peppermint Eucalyptus (Photograph to be posted in the appropriate topic.)
General razor
Schick P30 blade
Superior 70 mentholated aftershave
Result: BBS smooth shave

. . .

Chris, that's a different two-banded Vulfix than mine. In my case, it has a Grosvenor (sp?) handle (actually, one of the more comfortable handles to hold).

I got it some time ago, not long after Vulfix obtained Simpson. I understood it to be a Simpson knot in a Vulfix handle.

It's something of a waste for me, as I'm not a face-latherer, so I have hardly used it.

I have another, which is larger, but I find smaller brushes preferable these days.

And today an old hand-filed razor that probably sat in a TI warehouse for decades until it was branded Eagle for knifecenter.com. Lovely horn scales and bolsters on the shank and tang.

Here's a razor I haven't used in ages, a C&C Rooster (via Adolf Blaich of San Francisco) which gets very sharp, very easily. Sold to me twenty years ago by Dave Francis on the old Yahoo group. Used with Coates cream, a Rooney Finest and some English Fern:

Feels somewhat treasonous to use a French razor on Waterloo Day!

Well the Prussians arrived late at Waterloo, and so the J S Holler came a day late today. It's pictured above.

Tomorrow we shall try a stablemate.

The other razor labelled J S Holler & Co. I put it that way as I understand John Holler was an NYC cutlery shop that ordered razors from Germany, probably from several manufacturers. Holler also sold in bulk to other dealers, which is why these two have Adolf Blaich San Francisco on the other side of the shank. The two have different designs and only one has the C🐓C marking, but the blades have a grind that is very similar, maybe specified by Holler. Full hollow (no belly of an extra hollow), square tip, double shouldered. Today's razor also has a pointed ridge along the spine, and jimps top and bottom. Used with a Rooney Finest, Coates cream and L'Artisan Parfumeur Al Oudh. A superbly effortless shave, but a little sting with the aftershave. Possibly too sharp!
