Old T&H Creams
Old T&H Creams
I see there are five in the drawer, Rose, Lavender, Grafton, Trafalgar and 1805. I believe the two traditional scents (their best!) have been discontinued and replaced with new cologne-based scents. So the last few days I have used the three cologne-based ones I have. I don't care much for 1805, as it seems rather 'oceanic' and modern, even if they claim it is based on an original Truefitt recipe. The 1805 refers to the founding of the company, not a second reference to the year of Nelson's great triumph. Trafalgar itself - the cream - seems pleasant enough, with cedar and sandalwood combining to make a gingery scent. Grafton is an OK scent, too. What has surprised me is how much better they are as creams than I remembered: good, thick lather. Back when my creams were fresh, I preferred Trumper and Taylor to T&H, but they have aged well, perhaps through being rarely opened and thus having little exposure to the atmosphere. I haven't tried their new creams, like Apsley and Mayfair, and doubt I will as I have enough stashed away to keep me going for ages.

I'm amazed how long some shavers have been able to keep old creams functional.
I haven't had this experience, myself, however, as I have always preferred shaving soaps and I have avoided fragrances.

Re: Old T&H Creams
I have to admit Trafalgar was my favorite shave cream when I started 20 years ago and remains one of my favorite scents. When I first got it the scent was described to me as "old man." Now that I AM an old man I guess it fits better.
Re: Old T&H Creams
Last shave I gave the 1805 another go. It's not as artificial as my memory painted it. It paired well with Trumper's Skye.

Re: Old T&H Creams
I recently discovered that I still have a partial tub of T&H Rose cream and still love the strong scent. It has held up well from being in storage for years. I was always curious about their Trafalgar offerings. The description seems like something I would like. I wonder how the newer tubs would compare to the older ones. Is it worth checking out or is the current formula not good?

Re: Old T&H Creams
I do love my T&H creams. I use them sparingly though as I know they are traditional scents and will soon be discontinued. That and I'm more of a shaving soap user.
I have the lavender of years ago and I love it. I wish T&H made a lavender water that was traditional and smelled exactly like it.
When I learned that their Almond was discontinued I bought a few pots so I'd have enough for the rest of my life. It's such a wonderful scent. I still have my first pot though so I'm good.
I have this notion that at some point things will change yet again and everything that was old will be new again and all these wonderful products will be available. Probably after my lifetime though.

We used to have T&H locally but alas, no more. Did find TOBS in Oxford, MS and got a pot of Almond

I still have a couple of tubs of T&H Rose and Lavender (and the Ultimate Comfort) that I use periodically. They are pretty much dried out "croaps" at this point, but if I put some water on them while showering, they soften up a bit and produce a great lather with brushes. The T&H Lavender and Rose are nice ones.

The older Truefitt & Hill creams really did have a different character, both in scent and performance.

Re: Old T&H Creams
My favourite scent was the sandalwood (the old formulation), it had a sort of a pleasing burnt wood scent. I do have a couple of tubes of it still and use them very seldomly. I used to have many of their scents which were all awesome, but it has gotten harder to find online. And I haven't been to the Toronto location in many years, don't even know if they're still there.
