Stingy Lather

Post by EL Alamein »

Hello All, many of you know that from time to time I experiment with my lathering technique. Back in the summer of '24 I decided to do so again. This time to conserve lather.

For many years I've made lather in a very generous fashion and when the shave was over I had gobs of it in my brush and bowl that got rinsed down the drain. I decided to get back to making my lather in a more conservative fashion.

What I do now is to wet my bristles by soaking them in hot water then shake out the excess, then dip the tips in water a little bit and only do a few swirls at a time on the soap/cream and between picking up the soap - swirl, pump, mash, the brush in a lather bowl (in the case the Moss Scuttle) until I get a decent thin lather filling the bristles. I paint this on my face then repeat the process until I've created a lather that is thick, slick, and protective and fills the bristles. I'll then finish lathering my face with this.

At the end of the shave there is precious little lather left in the brush which is what my goal is but the shave is just as wonderful as if I had those gobs of lather left over. I call this the stingy lather.

Does anyone else make stingy lather these days?

I find myself swirling the brush just enough times on soap or hardened cream to fill it with lather when I work it with some water. No need to make more than is needed, and with discontinued or reformulated soaps and creams, I like to make the old versions last.

The lather stuff in my closet isn't going to run out any time soon at the rate of 3 shaves a week. When my shaving days are at an end, someone is going to have to deal with the leftover soaps, creams, brushes, blades, razors, Bla-Bla-Bla. Knock yourselves out grandkids! If it's up to my wife, she'll just throw it all away. For this reason, I'm only using the really great lathers: creams and soaps, with wild abandon. I laugh and celebrate those rare occasions anything eventually runs out.
That's just me. ( Shrugs! )

P.S.: Just in case anyone decides to judge or shame me for "wasting our precious resources": we're talking about an individual's personal hygiene practices and products. To each his or her own. [-X :D

So I gotta say what Dr. Moss describes was my impetus for this change: I have a few products that I really like that are not made anymore so I needed a way to make them last as much as possible.

Gary, I wish you all the lather you could every want! It's nobody's business how much lather you make. Enjoy!

When a producer of one of my favorite products calls it quits, the message to those of us who love(d) the dead product get the message " go jump off a bridge I Quit - go away ". My response is similar to receiving a divorce petition. It's over and good riddance. No tears, just go away, the sooner the better!
